Shakabrah Java - One of a kind

Saturday, March 04, 2006
Shakabrah is a real, genuine 'coffeehouse' of the type you usually only hear about. Not only is there a large selection of coffee flavorings, cookies, and other treats, but there is also "real food" and entertainment. A menu offers everything from breakfast pancakes to turkey dinners. Large portions, too! The prices are a little on the high side, but actually there is enough for two on one plate if you can both agree on the choice. ;-) Books line the shelves along the side, and people often sit and read while sipping coffee or eating a meal. But the entertainment room is the best part. A small stage, many tables and chairs (mismatched, of course!), sound equipment, lighting - it's a genuine flashback to the '60's and the 'coffeehouses' of fame. Sliding doors shut the room off from the other section, and a small hall leads to the restrooms in the back. Most unique of all, though, is a genuine old wooden telephone booth, which actually still seems to work. I've never seen one anywhere else!
