The International Cottages is a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. The admission is inexpensive, and children under 5 (you'll want to call to verify this...I'm almost sure this is the age) are admitted for free. There are several different cottages to visit and each cottage represents a different country. You'll have the opportunity to try food from that country, learn more about the flag and that country's history, and do a small craft project to take home with you. You can easily spend 3 or 4 hours without getting bored.

King's has a great casual atmosphere and I wouldn't recommend wearing anything dressier than jeans or khakis. The wait staff is consistently polite and always bring refills on sodas and bread before you even need to ask for them. The menu isn't huge, but everything on it is delicious. The shrimp scampi is prepared in a sauce that's a bit heavier on garlic than I've found elsewhere, so keep this in mind when ordering. The prices are cheaper than the competitors and the seafood is fresher.

Robin's Dog House is the only place I bring my dog for grooming services. After much searching, I have found a groomer that is both thorough and reasonably priced. They are kind to the animals, and include nail clipping in the price of the cut. Every other place I've used tacks on an extra charge for this service. They also offer a cute selection of novelty and gift items for a pet lover, some of them made locally and ready for personalization.

I love antique stores and find that each has a different specialty. House of Heirlooms has collected a huge selection of carnival glass. The pieces are quality and most are without any chips at all. The price on the carnival glass is competitive and rivals most online antique stores, and certainly any other antique store in San Diego. The variety of color is great too. I collect green carnival glass and found several pieces here. In addition, House of Heirlooms has a cool selection of photographs, most of them showcasing San Diego decades ago. These are incredibly cheap, and would work great for a scrapbooker or artist.

It's a Grind has a huge food menu, which is rare to find at coffee house, especially a local one with more limited resources and revenue. Their sandwiches aren't that great, and I'd recommend opting for one of their salads instead. They offer a huge variety of homemade salad dressings that include delicious fat-free options. The grilled chicken casear is always fresh, and the parmesan cheese grated on top is not pre-packaged parmesan, but fresh parmesan grated while your salad is being prepraed. The coffee is stong and reasonably priced. I've found that the flavored coffees aren't very bold, so I recommend getting black and sweetening it as you wish with cream and sugar.

Lestat's doesn't have the greatest atmosphere, and doesn't have the warmth and coziness that one usually experiences in a local, small coffee shop. However, it's quiet and the coffee is consistently good. I often stop in when I have work to do on the laptop and need concentration. They have free wireless internet and a cheap cup of good coffee. There aren't any frills here, but they do bake homemade cookies daily. Be sure to get a few to go--they often have deals and discounts for purchasing more than two.

Red Fox is open late and has a great atmosphere. There's a piano bar that's inconsistently staffed. It adds a wonderful warmth to your meal, and I do call before going to the Red Fox to see if someone is playing that night. It's so rare to find this at a restaurant anymore. The steaks are all great, however, the New York Strip and Top Sirloin are particularly good. My steak is always done to perfection. You can have various rubs and seasonings added to your steak, but I recommend getting it cooked without any extras and then eating it with a wonderful side of the horseradish sauce.

Crown House Barbers is a local barber shop that has managed to continue providing haircuts for less than $10 without sacrificing quality or style. The majority of patrons are indeed male, but that doesn't mean women won't get a great haircut. The cuts are simple and traditional, so this place is ideal if what you need is an uncomplicated trim. Dont expect a trendy haircut, though they can help you maintain the trendy cut you get somewhere else. I often use Crown House for those "in-between" cuts, when my hair is growing out, but I'm not quite ready to spend the big bucks to have it cut by my stylist again.

Korea House offers traditional korean fare with a twist. Instead of receiving rice with stir fry, you get it on the side as the perfect accompaniment to the spicy Koren BBQ served here. The spices are a wonderful fusion of traditional BBQ with things like ginger and garlic. The result is BBQ like you've never had it before. Along with rice are spicy eggrolls, tea, BBQ tofu cakes that are a delicious appetizer. The prices are a bit high, but I think it's well worth it.

I have a friend who's really into everything hip hop, and I had no idea what to get him for his birthday. I don't like getting gift cards, so I did want to get him something he'd like. The people at House of Flava were awesome! I gave them an idea of what my friend was like, and they picked out some great music and shirts that were completely his style. They spent a lot of time with me, and I really didn't spend all that much money there. They were just having a great time helping me find the perfect gifts. I was really impressed with how wonderfully I was treated. My friend loved his gifts.
