Ambience is great - if I could build a cabin in the San Juans - this is how it would be.
Just go, you won't be sad.
Bonus: like most decent Seattle restaurants, they finally have Hendricks gin.

No doubt Seva is a great store that carries some great furniture off the beaten track. However, I wish I could say our experience shopping at Seva was as quality as the furniture we bought.

No doubt Seva is a great store that carries some great furniture off the beaten track. However, I wish I could say our experience shopping at Seva was as quality as the furniture we bought.
Jeff is a very nice guy, but our experience of working with him was that he was really dialed into what *he* is passionate about and the fashions of the furniture industry, but we didn't think he was as skilled when it came to understand our tastes and hone into what *we* wanted.
We bought some great pieces and are happy with them, but the delivery times were appalling. It took over six months to get a sofa and chairs and a that we table waited for 3 months for had to be re-ordered. I don't fault Seva for the delays – obviously they are at the mercy of their suppliers, but I do fault them on a) not setting clearer expectations up-front on the order-times and b) not being remorseful or apologetic when things did get delayed.
In summary, great stuff, would have liked to buy more from them, but I simply don't have the patience to wait for it.

We have had a number of large trees removed with STP. They did excellent work, the owner was very thorough in explaining the process. They ground out the stumps with minimal disruption to other areas.
We also used them to do some restorative work to an enormous tulip tree on our lot. We were repouring the concrete sidewalk over its roots and were concerned about stressing the roots. They came in and delicately excavated some of the damaged roots and were able to seal the wounds before we poured the slab.
Sadly in the process of the re-landscaping one of our large cedar trees got a root disease that killed it. Just as it was starting to turn brown, I got a call from John (the owner) out of the blue telling me that he drove past our home the other day and noticed that he saw the cedar tree and thought it had died - wanted to give me a heads up. How's that for customer service!
Great service - would use them again or recommend them for heavy tree work.

This was my first time in Tacoma, and I was pleasantly suprised at the area and surroundings. The architecture around the museum is great - has a feel of the lowry gallery in manchester, uk.
The hot shop was fun - a place where you can watch artists blowing glass.
However, the rest of the museum wasn't worth the $10 price of admission.
It was ok - but for out of town guests, I'd take them to the flight museum well before hitting this place again.

Excellent place, quality breads by a native french baker. I have never found such good a replica of Parisienne breads anywhere else in Seattle.

To truly appreciate the bread... keep it simple and go french style. Ask for your sandwich to have JUST camembert and ham and nothing else. When you have bread so fine, you don't want to load up like you do at Subway with mayo mustard and all that other crap. You'll spoil the subtle flavours.
Oh - and the almond brioche is outstanding.
I ding it a star for ambience - it's got a sterile eastside feel to it. So load up on goodies and take your date on a picnic instead :)

I cook a lot of Thai food, and Viet Wah is by far my favourite place to shop for ingredients. Their veggies are always good and fresh, their seafood (while it may look less enticingly presented) is excellent, and their dried good selection has some hard-to-find stuff. Most of the time their prices are very cheap vs. Uwajimaya.
I used to enjoy shopping at the old Uwajimaya downtown. The ambiance was always great, and I felt like I was in another country sometimes. The new one has good selection, but it feels too "Whole Foods" and less authentic somehow. Viet Wah brought back what I used to love about the old Uwajimaya.
To give you an example of prices... I bought Rainier Cherries at both Whole Foods and Viet Wah in the last 2 weeks. At Whole Foods, I paid (foolish me), $9.99 a pound. At Viet Wah, I paid $1.29 a pound!!
I've also stopped buying seafood at Whole Foods and shop at Viet Wha for it - the quality of things like shrimp and fish is FAR superior. I've had very inconsistent experiences from WF.
Oh - added bonus. The Tamarind Tree restaurant is in the same parking lot, if you're feeling peckish :)

I used to really like the atmosphere and food at the old wild ginger location. However, I really dislike the new wild ginger. The food is blah as the quality has gone down hill. The flavours are poor, the balance of hot-sweet-sour-salty is all whacked out, and it's really greasy. The space and atmosphere is sterile and corporate.
Heck, I'd even go eat over in Bellevue before I ate here again. :)

How do the two stack up?

They say first impressions count, so let me give my impressions of my one visit to Toyoda compared with my many visits to Nishino…
My wife and I drove up to Toyoda on Friday night around 7pm. There was a small line but we were seated fast.
The Toyoda décor was on par with most sushi restaurants in Seattle – functional yet unspectacular. For environment and ambience, Nishino has it beat; not that I love Nishinos atmosphere – I find it somewhat modern and sterile, but it is nicer than Toyoda. One point Nishino.
After we were seated, the waitress quickly brought over complementary miso soup. The soup was average. The miso-paste was bland, it came with soggy tofu and spinach. Nishinos miso has them outclassed – the richer miso flavours, the smoky taste with clams and real seaweed is a much better experience.
Before we ordered, the waitress came over with yet another complimentary dish – a small noodle bowl. I found this to be a little odd and to detract from the experience. The noodles were nothing special and seemed to serve as some sort of “filler”. I came to eat good sushi, I don’t need to fill up on blanched noodles.
As we placed our order, we were informed that they had no fresh Shake (salmon) left, only the smoked salmon. Whoa, what kind of sushi place runs out of a staple like Salmon at 7pm on a Friday night? At this point I have to admit, I was starting to feel a little grumpy (low blood sugar :)) and questioning the wisdom of the pioneering Judys Book recommenders before me. My expectations for good sushi dropped as finished placing our order.
Amazingly, the sushi came out really fast – much quicker than Nishino usually gets it out. My first bite was the Hamachi. Wow. I don’t think I have tasted Hamachi so fresh outside of Tokyo. It literally melted in my mouth, it was spectacular and vastly exceeded my expectations. In all the years I have been eating at Nishino, I have never tasted a piece of Hamachi this fine.
Next up was the Torro (fatty tuna), which sticks our like a sore thumb on their menu. Most of their nigiri pieces are $4-5, but the Torro runs $10. My bite of Torro cannot be described as anything other than divine. I’ve only tried two pieces and I’m sold on Toyoda already.
Next came the Unagi, which was also a nicer cut than Nishino – it was wider and more moist, not as saturated in kabayaki sauce.
We also tried their Spicy Tuna Tempora roll; which is thinly sliced and comes in about 14 pcs in a heap on a plate. It was very good, but not spectacular. The arboretum roll at Nishino has it beat.
On the service side – I felt like it was almost a little too fast. I felt like we ate fast-food sushi really quick and didn’t having a lengthy dining experience. This was a negative for me.
So, where do I net out on Nishino vs. Toyoda?
Nishino is where I will go when I want a longer more intentional meal, to enjoy and savor more variety of dishes. Toyoda is where I will go when I’m just craving good sushi without the expense of special-occasion-ness that Nishno carries.
