Hi Brooke. In Seattle, we don't insure our homes against tornados but some of us do against earthquakes. My wife and I use USAA for auto, home, and life insurance and really like them. Terrific rates and a wide variety of financial services above and beyond basic insurance. I've been in a couple of minor fender-benders and have always received top-notch service and fair treatment from them. I strongly encourage you to look into USAA as an insurance option.

Without getting too political here, I saw a story today that literally crushed my spirit and sank my soul. Evidently our president believes catching a 7.5 lb perch in the lake he owns is the "best moment" of his presidency. You read that right, a 7.5 lb perch. What an inspired and inspiring leader. Here's a link to the Reuters story: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12683890/

My wife and I discovered this place while walking down Halsted one Friday evening. We were with friends and decided to pop-in for some food and a glass or two of wine. What we got was an excellent dining experience unlike many others we had in Chicago when we lived there (moved to Seattle last summer). The bar and restaurant are divided into two parts. The "back" room is where we sat. It's small, quiet, and very, very intimate. Dim lights, ecclectic decor, and friendly, attentive service. The food was terrific (country french) and the wine was superb. Not too pricey either. If you're in the neighborhood and looking for something a little different, give the Red Rooster a try.

Mi Francesca offers terrific Italian cuisine and the hords of people that pack the restaurant most nights are a testament to that fact. The cuisine is primarily northern italian. The winelist is good. On weekend nights, the place is loud and busy. In this price range, I wouldn't say it's the best place for Italian in Chicago (Cafe Spiaggia is better) but it is certainly a safe bet. It's also really easy to get to - 2-3 blocks east of the Belmont El stop.

Marche is one of Chicago's better restaurants. I hesitate to call it great as there are so many wonderful places to eat in the Windy City. That said, Marche delivers wonderful food and a distinctive, vibrant, and stimulating atmosphere. Make sure you call ahead for reservations as it is one of the more popular restaurants in the area and the city for that matter.

These days my wife and I don't get out of the house much on weekends. Busy being parents and all that. Recently, my wife was kind enough to allow me to meet a couple of friends for a beer and a show (Destroyer) at the Crocodile Cafe. We chose the Lava Lounge in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood for its proximity to the Croc and the laid back scene. In fact, the thing I like about the Lava Lounge is that there isn't a scene. Punks (the musically inspired kind) mix with slackers, mix with working stiffs, mix with what passes for glitterati in Seattle. Zero pretense, solid spinning, and a terrific range of beers on tap. It's also really, really dark inside which is neither here nor there but is something distinctive about the place. Anyway, the Lava Lounge is one of my favorite casual watering holes in the city.

Hung does it all. He'll paint your house (inside and out), he'll fix leaky faucets, replace rotting boards in your deck, mow your lawn, trim your trees, etc. Heck, he'll even help you move in/out! We purchased our home in Wallingford last summer and hired Hung through a referral from my wife's parents. He had just finished painting their home in Newcastle. He and his team painted every room in our house and did a fantastic job. Terrific attention to detail etc. What's more they finished the job on time and on budget. Since then we've refered him to several other people including my parents for whom he did a wonderful job prepping their home for sale. My mother's quote was something like "Hung single handedly added $30K of value into our house for roughly $1K of work". The only reason I'm sharing this secret with the JB community is that he's too good to keep a secret. Give him a call - you will not be disappointed.
