Paul Chen's Hong Kong Restaurant is one of the better Chinese food establishments in the Charles Village area. They serve the usual variety of chinese dishes--but compared to several other local establishments, I have found their food to be better. They deliver as well, so if you're looking for good Chinese food in the Charles Village area without leaving home, this is an option I certainly would recommend!

Orient Express is a little Chinese restaurant located in the heart of Charles Village--they serve the usual Chinese food favorites, General Tso's chicken, Beef with Broccoli, and the like. They also have recently installed a sushi bar as well. The food isn't great, but it is passable. They do have an area to eat-in there, but the atmosphere is certainly lacking. Overall, I think it's worth visiting in a pinch, but there are certainly better options around.

If you're looking for a reliable Florist in the Charles Village area, I highly recommend Gordon's. Their flowers are always beautiful, and from my experience, are long lasting. I've never been disappointed in the years I've frequented their shop. Everything I've ever gotten there, from tulips to lilies to roses, has been gorgeous. Like most full service florists, they are a little bit pricier than some other options, but there's nothing quite like getting a dozen roses arranged by Gordon's.

The Silk Road Cafe is a great spot to hit if you're in the mood for interesting Asian themed food. They used to be located across the street in the Blackstone Apartment building, but have since migrated over to the Mattin Center on the Johns Hopkins Campus. It is a bit of a pain to get there, due to a lack of parking, but it's certainly worth the battle--try the Cold Noodle Salad with Peanut Lime Dressing. Their noodle soups are also very tasty--although sadly, my former favorite, Teriyaki Tofu, didn't make the menu at the new location. Their chicken teriyaki is *almost* as good.

The Golden West Cafe is a very kitschy locale to stop for food in Hampden. Like most of the surrounding businesses, it has a very unique atmosphere inside--lots of character. Though the food was indeed tasty, and portions were very large, prices were a little on the high side. Nonetheless, they have some very unique southwestern-y options for breakfast that I've never seen elsewhere. A good place to try at least once!

The Carlyle Apartments are located near the Johns Hopkins University, on University Parkway. I lived there for a year with a roommate in a fairly spacious, upper level apartment with a nice view of the city. All in all, it was a decent place to live--but the elevators were slow, rent was a little steep, and the management could be a little bit disorganized. But the places are very big, and have parquet flooring. Also, they have a 24 hr doorman, and I always thought the building was very safe. One other point--the building is also home to a hotel--which can be convenient if you have guests from out of town--but can also mean there are random people wandering the halls at times.

The Plough and the Stars is a lovely bar located in Center City--the building looks like it is a bank from the outside, but inside it has been completely renovated. It now has two stories inside, and is very beautifully decorated. It is frequented by a generally young, trendy crowd--and seemed to be the place to be the times I've gone. They have a good selection of drinks, as well as food. A nice place to bring a date!

Monks is a very cute little restaurant located in Center City Philadelphia--they serve very tasty food, but the main attraction is the phenomenal beer list. They are a self described "Belgian Beer Emporium." They have an unparalleled number of beers on their menu--both on tap and in bottles--from all over the world. Their food is also very good--particularly their burgers.

The Fresh Stop is a little market located on the corner of MacDade Boulevard and Morton. They always have several fantastic deals described on the sign outside the door--but no matter what you end up buying, it's always very reasonably priced. I particularly enjoy going there to buy vegetables--things are generally half the price you'd pay at most grocery stores. Their produce also looks fresh, AND tastes great. And their staff is very pleasant as well.

Ryan's Daughter is a really neat Irish pub to visit with friends or family. They serve a variety of traditionally Irish foods, some with a more modern twist. They have a couple very different varieties of french fries, for example. They also serve the traditional assortment of Irish beer. Their atmosphere is very nice--it really feels like you might have been transported over to the Emerald Isle when you walked in the door. And they periodically have live music--a definite plus.
