Frankly, when my best friend offered to take me to visit the Hagley Museum, I was a bit skeptical--I heard they were all about gunpowder, and that's not one of my biggest interests. However, after spending the day there--I had a great time! I learned a lot about gunpowder production for sure--but also about the way life worked back in those days on the DuPont facility. It really was a very interesting trip--I'd highly recommend it. One tip though--wear comfy shoes! It's a lot of walking.

Amicci's is a great place to visit if you're in the mood for good Italian food, but don't want to spend too much for it. The decor is nice and casual, the menu is much less expensive than other restaurants in the area, and the food is fantastic. Particularly great--the tortellini. Their service is very good; food arrives speedily, and everyone is very courteous. Only drawback--there can often be a wait, as this place tends to be very popular.

When my fiance took me to Tavern on the Green as part of my Christmas gift--I was super excited. Though the Tavern was definitely a very nice place, and our food was very good--I have to say that the service was pretty bad. We waited at our table for over a half hour before anyone came to ask us if we'd ordered yet. We specifically had to ask for a wine menu, and after we finished our dinner, it was at least another 45 minutes until someone came and asked us if we wanted our check. The food was excellent though--particularly the lobster bisque. In terms of atmosphere--it was a unique blend of glass, fancy chandeliers, and a pub--with wooden walls. All in all, I had a good time, but if you're in a rush--maybe you would want to try elsewhere.

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts is a great place to visit if you're an art fan--they have a nice, diverse collection of art work, both modern and not so modern. They have a decent amount of sculpture, but mostly paintings. Their admission fees are fair, and once a week on Wednesdays they stay open late, and offer a discount in the afternoons and evening. Definitely worth a visit at least once.

The Pope John Paul II Cultural Center is another must-see spot for Catholics visiting DC. It's essentially a Catholic museum--they have all kinds of interesting exhibits about Catholicism and the Catholic Church in the US and around the world. When I went last, my favorite exhibit was on art work depicting the Virgin Mary. It is a really different and unique place to visit--and I highly recommend making the trip.

The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is a great place to visit if you're a Catholic in DC. The place is enormous--it has a big cathedral type space upstairs with little chapels entirely surrounding the perimeter, dedicated to Saints and nations. The bottom level has a crypt church as well as more of the little chapels dedicated to Saints and nations. It's a work in progress--they're continually adding more to the Cathedral every time I go. They also have a very good Catholic book store, if you're looking for something in particular.

The National Museum of American History is one of my favorite Smithsonians--like all of the others, it is free to enter. They have a lot of really neat American history to see--one of my favorites is an exhibit on the White House and presidential life, with a collection of dresses worn by first ladies. It's a great place to visit to learn more about our country for both children and adults--and is much more fun to learn from than a textbook!

The National Gallery of Art is a part of the Smithsonian--so the biggest perk of visiting is that it's free to enter. The museum has a very large collection of art; try as I might, I've never been able to see the entire thing in one day--though it still pales in comparison to the size of some other art museums like the Met in New York or the Louvre in Paris. Their collection is decent--mostly paintings, with some sculptures here and there. If you go, I recommend trying some gelato in the cafeteria--they have a relaxing and cool place to sit next to an underground waterfall. A great way to refresh during those hot DC summers!

The National Museum of Natural History is a great place to visit--it has hours of interesting exhibits about evolution, rocks and minerals, dinosaurs, and other fossils. A huge perk--like all of the other Smithsonian museums, admission is completely free. It's a great place to take your kids--but also a great place to visit on your own--it will always hold a special place in my heart, because I went there on my first date with my fiance. They also have some interesting (sometimes unrelated) exhibits that change from time to time--for example, when we visited that time, they had an exhibit on the history of baseball.

The National Air & Space Museum is one of the fantastic Smithsonian Museums. A huge perk to visiting any of these museums is that they're all FREE. Additionally, the National Air & Space museum has a bunch of really nice exhibits--most striking is the planes hanging over your head when you walk into the lobby. They have a lot of information about what it's like to be an astronaut, as well as exhibits on the solar system and astronomy. It's a great place for kids--and adults as well! Hours of entertainment...and also hours of walking. Wear comfy shoes!
