When my sister and I were kids, my mom had something of a falling out with our ballet teacher because she wouldn’t put my sister in pointe shoes before her feet were done growing. A competing dance school called Belliston Academy of Ballet was willing to let my ten-year-old sister go en pointe, so my mom switched schools. It quickly became clear that Belliston’s was not the answer, however. My sister was primarily a gymnast, but the dance school had trouble with having only a portion of her time and commitment: Belliston’s is, above all else, an ambitious school for ambitious dancers. For the majority of dancers who just want to dance for fun, I would definitely NOT recommend Belliston’s, but steer them instead in the direction of a more recreational type of dance school.

At a job a while back I was asked to get spare keys made for the office. Pretty much no one carried the kind of key I needed, until I tried Bear Valley Lock & Key. They had the keys I needed, and a good many of them, too; I was able to get keys made for all of my co-workers who didn’t already have one. The woman who helped me was very friendly and efficient, and the prices on the keys were very good too – more than other key shops I had called (who, ironically, didn’t even have the keys despite the high prices they quoted me). I would definitely recommend this key shop to anyone!

At my old apartment there was a bar and a liquor store right next door to each other. The bar, which I never went into, was a biker bar and seemed a little rough, judging by the activity that I saw from time to time in the parking lot. I got the feeling that the two were adjoining, although it could have just been that the proximity affected my impression of the liquor store; however, even though the service and selection of the liquor store were both pretty average, I always felt a little uncomfortable there.

First of all, their sizes are much generous than most other pizza places: when they say large, they mean large! They also tend to use toppings that you won’t find at other pizza places, such as basil and pine nuts. If the toppings seem unorthodox, all I can say is “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!”

In the midst of all this, however, is Bali Crafts, located in Southwest Plaza Mall, which specializes in imports from Bali. The store carries beautiful handmade sterling silver jewelry, imported traditional-styled clothing such as wrap skirts and loose cotton or linen dresses, and beautiful woodcarvings that make worthy gifts. Bali Crafts has very reasonable prices, and you’re guaranteed to find things you won’t see anywhere else!

When my mom’s car was rear ended about ten years ago, she took it to Auto Crafters to have the repairs done. Although there was no special reason we chose that shop, we ended up being quite satisfied with the work that was done. In a completely different situation, when my car was rear ended about five years ago, the damage was enough to total the old sports car; Auto Crafters was very willing to work with me to cut corners and keep the repair costs within the settlement that I was getting – AND they did a good job of the work they did. Whether your insurance covers your repairs or you have a budget to stay within, Auto Crafters is an excellent place to get the work done!

When my boyfriend was having back problems, he was referred to Ascent Physical Therapy to see if the problem could be treated non-invasively. Ascent is conveniently located across the street from Southwest Plaza Mall. The office staff and the physical therapists were all very friendly, and the place was clean and quiet, with all of the necessary equipment spread attractively throughout the rooms, leaving plenty of space and avoiding the feeling that lots of people are watching you. Although my boyfriend ended up needing surgery and didn’t go back after that first visit, he really liked the people and the service he was given at Ascent.

If you’re shopping on Pearl Street in Boulder, it’ll be worthwhile to check out Art Source International, particularly if you enjoy historical artifacts. The store specializes in old and reproduction maps and prints (mainly maps), and they also have a lot of historic photographs of Colorado. You can see a selection of what they have on their website, http://www.rare-maps.com, but browsing through the store is much more fun – it’s neat to see the old photos, advertisement prints, and maps up on the walls. The atmosphere is also very low pressure, so shopping is a laid-back experience.

Animal Crackers is a pet store that has moved around a lot. When I was a kid, it was in the Coal Mine and Pierce area; then it moved to Bowles and Kipling; now, apparently, it is in Lakewood. Despite these moves, Animal Crackers always felt like the neighborhood pet store. The owner made it a point to know his regular customers, and I can remember how comfortable I always was there as a kid. As a dedicated pet owner, I would definitely recommend Animal Crackers to other pet lovers!
