When I was a kid, all I knew about drive-ins was what I’d seen in movies such as Grease. We had one in our neighborhood, but I never went there until I was in my late teens. For the last few years, Cinderella Twin has been struggling to stay open: they’ve been fighting demolition, but it keeps getting delayed another year…and another. Personally, I think there is no movie experience quite like the drive-in – you don’t need a perfectly tuned sound system and reclining seats in order to enjoy a movie properly! Please, folks, show your support for the local drive-in, Cinderella Twin, before it’s too late!

Another place my employer/friend used to get food from was the Cheese Company. They didn’t deliver, so it was usually up to me to pick it up. They offered an excellent variety of prepared gourmet foods, which is convenient if you’re having a dinner party or a get-together with friends and don’t want to cook. I picked up orders for my employer pretty frequently, and the employees always remembered me and greeted me with a smile.

I can remember my kid sister always ordering grilled cheese, no matter what kind of restaurant we went to. Now there is a place to go for grilled cheese connoisseurs such as my sister! Chedd’s, a “gourmet grilled cheese” restaurant in Denver, recently opened another location in Littleton. The restaurant has grilled cheese about any way you can envision it: white cheese, yellow cheese, light bread, dark break, with or without soup… The restaurant’s atmosphere is friendly and extremely relaxed, but the quality of their food is excellent! A must for grilled cheese lovers…AND their kids!

My sister and I started going to Chatfield Gymnastics when we were pretty little. I never excelled beyond the intermediate level classes, but my sister joined pre-team and then the team, eventually going on to become a level ten gymnast. During her gymnastics career, she went to many different gyms across the state. Between her experience and mine, I have to say that Chatfield is a fantastic gym for recreational gymnastics, but there are probably better gyms with better instruction for those who are really serious about gymnastics. Additionally, Chatfield Gymnastics has several martial arts programs, also ideal for recreational lessons.

When my cat was missing a number of years ago, one of the shelters I called during my search was the Cat Care Society. They were always very friendly and helpful (and I called a number of times). Besides my experiences with them, I’ve known people who have dealt with the Society, and they’ve always been satisfied. The shelter is a no-kill, cage-free shelter, and is usually pretty full as a result. Their website is great: they have lots of information about themselves, as well as pictures and descriptions of many of the cats they have up for adoption, which I think is a huge plus for anyone who is looking for a kitty.

Located in Idaho Springs, just around the corner from the Indian Springs Resort, the Buffalo Bar has a selection that includes just what you might expect: buffalo meat. My favorite is pizza with buffalo meat as a topping!

When my boyfriend moved in with me, we were looking for a self storage unit at a good price – goodness knows, some places are so expensive! We found Brookridge, located in the area of Belleview and Broadway. The storage units weren’t cheap, but they were priced better than most other large storage units we’d seen. They also had the amenities of large storage units: coded gate entry, alarms, etc. At the same time, Brookridge has the service of a small self-storage company, with on-site managers that are friendly and easy to deal with. If you need a storage unit in the area, I’d definitely recommend Brookridge!

It’s fun for us Denver-ites to head up to Boulder sometimes and browse the shops on old Pearl Street. One of the bookstores on the shopping strip is the Boulder Bookstore, which is remarkably big and well-stocked for an indie bookstore – I wouldn’t have realized it was an independent store if their website hadn’t said so. The two-level bookstore has the pleasant buzz of thriving business, and the service is just right: they have enough other customers to keep them busy, so that you don’t get three different people ask you if they can help you find something, but when you DO need service it’s friendly and easy to find.

Just up the road from the Cherry Creek Mall is Bonnie Brae Wine & Liquor Mart. This liquor store is fairly large and carries an excellent selection of wine and liquor. The service is also extremely friendly, possibly because it’s primarily a neighborhood liquor store; the employees are always available to help you find something. A great liquor store to shop at!

You know the kind of person – the one who is always raving about the independent businesses and poo-pooing the chains. On the suggestion of this sort of person, I checked out Bonnie Brae Ice Cream, in Cherry Creek. I was sorely disappointed – not NEARLY as good as I’d hoped. The special flavor that I tried was not very good, and although the plain vanilla was decent, there was nothing special about it – it was just vanilla. It might be a nice place to go for the locals, but for me it just wasn’t as good as the places where I usually get my ice cream.
