During sidewalk sales in the summertime, I shopped a little at Gypsy Jones in Old Littleton. I was always very impressed with their clothing, shoes, even purses. They usually have stuff that is quite lovely, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen an item on their racks that looks particularly second-hand. Definitely worth checking out!

One of the gyms my sister went to when she was in team gymnastics was Gymnastika. This is an excellent gym for those who are truly serious about being a gymnast. The coaches are usually from Russia, a country well known for its expert gymnastics instruction. However, the highly competitive nature of this gym can cause a strained atmosphere at times: think “soccer moms.” However, if you or your child has the ambition and skill to be a great gymnast, and you feel you can stay far enough away from the politics of the sport to remain sane, then by all means it’s an excellent place to take gymnastics lessons.

Great Wall Chinese Buffet is an all-you-can-eat buffet of Chinese food and other Asian cuisines. Most of the food is okay, but definitely not the quality you would get in normal restaurants. However, I would definitely recommend that you DON’T try the sushi. They don’t serve it cold or on ice, as most sushi restaurants do; rather, it sits out on the counter until it is chosen. The pickled ginger is also pretty gross, as it tastes WAY too pickled. After eating at Great Wall, I had a stomachache – the only time I’ve ever had one after eating sushi. Although I think I probably would have been okay had I steered clear of the sushi, the experience is enough to keep me from going back again.

A little while back, I had lunch at a fairly new restaurant in the Denver Tech Center. The food was good, and although the restaurant was large and airy, it seemed fairly quiet. The service was fast and friendly. My boyfriend and I didn’t realize until partway through the meal that the restaurant seemed to be Christian-themed, judging by the decorations on the walls and the quote on their business cards; the religious affiliation was so subtle, however, that it was neither a major benefit or a deterrent.

Another dance school at which I took a few classes as a kid was Gotta Dance. The instructor and owner, Randy Roberts, I remember as being harder than my normal teacher, in the way he’d push my sister and me to do moves we weren’t accustomed to. Although he was a fun teacher, I remember him as more of an adult dance instructor, probably partly because that’s where my mom took most of her adult classes.

Give Again is a new local thrift store that moved into an old hardware store building just a few years ago. The store is huge, much bigger than most thrift stores, but it has kind of a cold, warehouse feel to it – it just can’t shake that hardware store feeling. It has a pretty decent selection of furniture, which often includes antiques, but the prices on furniture are often higher than I would expect. As for the rest of the merchandise, I haven’t seen anything else there that I would want to buy – it’s just the normal thrift store junk and ratty clothing. You might find a treasure there from time to time, but it’ll most likely be in the furniture section, and you’ll almost certainly have to pay its worth.

I stopped at this bookstore once to buy a book for a friend on the way to the hospital to visit him. The bookstore has a decent selection of new books, but it also seems to have a good selection of gifts, particularly metaphysical-type gifts. I’ve also heard that they have small local bands or performers play there sometimes. The bookstore had a quiet, friendly atmosphere, but unless you’re looking for a pretty popular book you may not find what you want, since their selection isn’t very wide.

Fontana Sushi is, as far as I can tell, a small sushi restaurant chain. They have a couple of locations in the Denver Metro area, but the one I am familiar with is the one on Alameda: an employer/friend of mine used to order delivery from there when I was around during lunchtime. The service was great; the delivery was always prompt and the food well packed with ice; and the food was always tasty and fresh. If you eat in, they have an excellent $1-per-piece special on sushi.

I can remember back in the day when Fat City was called “Fun Plex.” It had the look and feel of an older roller skating rink, bowling alley, and arcade. Then, about six or seven years ago, Fun Plex got its makeover and became Fat City. It’s a much cooler place now – black lights in the skating rink and bowling alley, cooler music, etc. However, last time I was there I thought the place’s new look had also started to attract more of a trendy teenage crowd, so the fallback is definitely that it has become much less of a family place than it used to be.

Discount movie theaters are a dying breed, and meanwhile the prices at the regular theaters increase more and more. Elvis Cinemas is probably the second or third discount theater to inhabit this particular theater, and they’ve most certainly been there the longest. Their prices are good, and they often have coupons in the local mailers or on the backs of grocery store receipts. The seats aren’t quite as comfortable as some of the more modern theaters, but they’re still not bad – and, hey, you’re seeing a movie for a third of the normal price! It’s definitely a good way to see a movie that you weren’t totally excited about, or to see a movie you loved for the second or third time.
