I like antique malls because of the variety of antiques and prices that a mix of dealers tends to bring to a store, but if the antique mall is too big, it can be rather overwhelming and over stimulating. Therefore, the Mainstreet Mercantile in Lakewood is one of my favorite antique malls – it’s just the right size. There are plenty of booths to browse through, but not so many that you have to pack a lunch and plan on spending the day!

Let It Bead is a totally different kind of experience. As an alternative to pre-made jewelry or even hobby stores, go to Let It Bead to make your jewelry right then and there! The employees are very nice and will help you whenever needed. Much better than having to buy entire packages just for a few beads, or getting home with packages of clasps only to find out they won’t work like you want them to or that you’re not sure how to complete your jewelry. Let It Bead makes it easy to make your own jewelry without having to be an expert!

Dean Lagrave makes me think of the way things used to be (or so it’s rumored): being able to have a friendly relationship with your insurance agent. I can email or call Dean, and he always responds promptly; he is also always very helpful when I have a question or a request. Surprisingly, he also remembers me much better than I would expect. I’ve also been insured by large companies where the only interaction you have is over the internet, or even by small agencies that just don’t care to get to know their customers. Having experienced those situations, I have to say that nothing makes you feel more secure than having a personable insurance agent. I would recommend Dean Lagrave to anyone who is gathering insurance quotes!

Another good Mexican restaurant is La Casona. I discovered this one because an auto parts store that I used was nearby. It was well worth the discovery! The restaurant has excellent food and a wide variety of a la carte and combination plates to choose from. The atmosphere is also about what you would expect from a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant: a pleasant buzz at times, but fairly quiet sometimes too.

Shopping in downtown Littleton is always fun because of the many unique shops. One shop I like in particular is Kerreen O’Connor, which is an Irish and Scottish themed store. The store has a quaint but friendly atmosphere, since it is located in a yellow- painted, 100-year-old house. The staff is friendly, and it’s fun to look through the unique things they have on their shelves. It’s also a great place to go for gifts or gift certificates!

The owners of Jerusalem know how to run a business: they have a rather hole-in-the-wall middle eastern restaurant, but it’s located in a college area – Denver University – and it’s open quite late, if not all night long. The food is excellent and conceivably within a college student’s budget. Definitely someplace worth trying, especially if you’re sick of the usual fare available late at night!

If you need a weekend away from it all, check out the Indian Springs Resort in Idaho Springs! The hotel has three different sections to choose from – the old, historic section (where I love to stay), and two newer sections, one slightly nicer than the other. The advantage of the historic section is, of course, that you are right down the hall from everything, but the disadvantage is that the rooms don’t have showers, only sinks and toilets. Still, I think it’s worth it for the old-time feel of the place! The resort has excellent hot springs: the caves, which are accessed from the restrooms, are delightfully steamy, but if you want to go co-ed you’ll need to reserve a private bath, either indoors or outdoors. There is also a pool that is fed with hot spring water, but that is overall much cooler than the caves or private baths. The resort also has an excellent dining room and a cute gift shop, and it’s located just around the corner from a strip of quaint little shops in historic Idaho Springs.

If you work in the Denver Tech Center, you’re probably aware of the many lunch restaurants and carry-out places that have sprung up in the area to capitalize on the business world’s lunch hour. Many of them are chain restaurants, but there are also several really good independent restaurants. One such place is Heidi’s Deli, which serves a variety of hot and cold subs. Heidi’s menu includes many old favorites, but also introduces a few original concoctions that are quite good. You can eat in or carry out; either way, the service is fast and friendly. Definitely worth trying!

Handle Bar and Grill is a fun diner with a unique cyclists’ theme. The food is excellent, with plenty of different options. Their special Honey Spice salad dressing was particularly tasty, and their crème brule was absolutely divine! The service was prompt and friendly, as well, despite the diner atmosphere. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a fresh new taste!

Usually, the best ethnic food is found at little hole-in-the-wall restaurants; however, Hacienda Colorado has broken all the rules. By far the best Mexican food I’ve ever had, Hacienda Colorado has an extensive selection of food, as well as more than half a dozen sauces to choose from, ranging from mild to spicy. Hacienda Colorado also has a busy atmosphere – evidence of their popularity – and friendly service; their waiters usually team up, meaning that you have two people looking after you, and not just one. If you’re looking for a new Mexican restaurant to try, Hacienda Colorado ought to be the one!
