Jordan Alexanders Preschool Academy provides infant and toddler care, preschool care, and a private kindergarten program. The school is quite large for an independently owned childcare center, but a tour of the premises will prove that the school is very high quality: classrooms are well furnished and well stocked, staff easily meets the ratios required by state law, and the lesson plans are well adapted to the children’s needs. However, this preschool, like any other childcare center, is susceptible to staffing problems such as high turnover and the staff being made up mostly of teenagers and college-age young women.

From the time I was six until I turned 19, I took lessons at Little Theatre. I can’t imagine any other dance studio being more appropriate for children. Little Theatre does not take dance so seriously that their students can’t have fun and feel pressured to always work harder; but Little Theatre still expects their students to learn responsibility and poise. Little Theatre lets their students decide whether they want to dance as a career and compete, or whether they simply want to dance as recreation. This flexibility makes Little Theatre perfect for every student.

Watch out for a hair stylist named Kimberly! When I called and spoke to her, I asked who there was good at cutting curly hair, and she replied, “Oh, any of us here can do it.” She was the one I got when I arrived. I told her exactly what I wanted and still got the worst cut of my life. I told her to start the layering at my chin, and I ended up with layers that were only two inches long! She had cut the length to where I said, but by the time she was done layering, only the fringe of hair at the nape of my neck was that length anymore, and there was a very obvious gap between that section of hair and the next-longest layer. I had to have the cut fixed, as there was absolutely no way I could endure months of my hair that way, so in my picture it’s much shorter than I normally wear it – but it turned out cute, I think! Even so, it was THE WORST haircut experience of my life – I shouldn’t have had to go through that, particularly not when I explained in detail what I wanted!

Recently I went into the Petco at Littleton and Crestline. While my boyfriend was shopping for dog food, I fell a little in love with a young female rat, and asked to see her. The blond lady who came to open the cage asked if I was absolutely sure I was going to buy her. I was astonished by the question, but I answered honestly – of course I wasn’t positive, but I was still interested. I was even more astonished when the lady launched into a very nasty lecture about how she couldn’t let me hold the rat unless my buying it depended on it – for example, only if I had to make sure first that she wouldn’t bite me. She said that it put too much stress on the animals. The woman treated me like I was a pesky kid wanting to hold all the animals, and it made my Petco experience a very humiliating and upsetting one. The most upsetting part was that I might have decided to buy the rat, had I held her and felt there was a connection between us – but that woman denied me the opportunity to find out.

If you want to experience a really good coffee shop, forget about those chain cafés – head down to Sisters’ Expresso, located in a Victorian house in Old Littleton. The coffee is some of the best you’ll find around town, and you’ll get to enjoy the atmosphere created by housing a coffee shop in a picturesque Victorian setting. The small-town feel of downtown Littleton also adds to the experience.

The Attic Bookstore recently moved to a new location in Englewood. The new store, located at 200 West Hampden Avenue, has more room, which means more books. The store is also now a gothic horror-themed store (although they still sell books of all genres), and looks kind of like it’s decorated for Halloween – except it’s like that all year round. The store is quiet, and the bookshelves are set up to create nooks and crannies throughout, where customers can sit in unique chairs and browse through books. The store also offers complimentary coffee, so that you almost get the feel of a bookstore-café, just on a smaller scale. A delightful experience!

Colorado’s own independent bookstore chain, Tattered Cover, has big selection AND big morals. The store believes in America’s right to individual privacy, and therefore recently refused to release customer purchase information to our rather conservative government. The store also believes in the value of donating to charities: instead of members getting a discount on their purchases, a portion of their purchases goes to the charity of their choice. Each location also features a café, comfortable and unique seating throughout the store, and that comfortable bookish atmosphere that we bookworms so love!

Need a new place to hang out? Try Barnes & Noble on Bowles and Wadsworth. The large bookstore features a central café where you can order coffee and treats, plus a large selection of books and magazines to browse while you eat/drink. Although the café can be busy, especially on the weekends, the seating makes for a good place to study, work, or simply browse the internet, and you can find more comfortable seating scattered throughout the store. The bookstore also has a large movies and music section, making a little something for everyone!

With a handful of general practitioners on staff, Family Medicine Clinic is sure to have a doctor for everyone in your family. The office is conveniently located near Southwest Plaza Mall, the shopping center of unincorporated Jefferson County (an area generally known as Littleton). The office is also just a hop, skip, and a jump away from a large retirement living complex – and hopefully the proximity will keep the residents hopping, skipping, and jumping a little longer. The downsides to the practice are how busy it can be, making your waits on the phone and in the office tedious at times, and the frequency with which some of their doctors come and go. All in all, however, it’s an excellent practice to use to get the general medical care you need.
