If you are diabetic and need to visit the doctor frequently, the last thing you want is to leave each quarterly checkup feeling depressed. Dr. James Chappell was my doctor for the first two years after I was diagnosed as diabetic, and I always dreaded my visits – I always had to brace myself for the criticism. Early on, I was continually reprimanded for eating too many fatty foods, such as cheese. Toward the end my time there, however, when I was eating mostly carbohydrates, my blood sugars started getting pretty high; my doctor told me to start eating more protein and fatty foods (such as cheese), and recommended that I go on the South Beach diet. Well, it turned out that he had just failed to tell me that one of my insulins went bad after a month, and I’d been using it while it wasn’t as effective. I was so upset about his wishy-washy treatment suggestions and the fact that he tried to suggest I go on a fad diet (I weighed 115 pounds, max) that I left and found a new endocrinologist. My diabetes has been under good control ever since!

If you like shopping for antiques (or “antiquing” as my family calls it) then Brass Armadillo is the place for you! The place is HUGE – you’ll probably walk at least a couple of miles just to see everything. However, the size means lots of dealers, with lots of different things, and lots of different ranges of prices. It’s a lot of fun to spend several hours browsing the booths, but make sure you plan to spend several hours there – there’s no way you can shop the entire place in a short amount of time!

I can remember the Borders wing of Southwest Plaza Mall before the bookstore took it over. The arcade used to be there, as well as a small used bookstore, a Taco Bell, and a couple of other little shops. Borders, of course, eliminated all of that. Although the bookstore is big and has a good selection, it is still just another chain bookstore with a coffee shop, and this particular one hasn’t struck any chords with me. The store just seems too sterile (and too busy around the holiday months). When it comes to bookstores, there are simply others that I prefer.

For a while my family and I used Dr. Barnes for our veterinarian. After several incidents, however, we decided to stop using that particular vet. When our rabbit got sick, he knew what was wrong, but he told us a rabbit wasn’t worth treating; we took the rabbit to another vet, who DID treat her, and the rabbit is alive to this day – very old, but very healthy. Also, I almost adopted a cat who was very sick; when I took her in for her initial checkup, Dr. Barnes also knew what was wrong with her, but advised me to take her back, as it wasn’t worth treating her since she wasn’t a long-time, beloved pet. The cat died the following weekend, back at the shelter from where I’d originally gotten her. Although I can understand Dr. Barnes’ reasoning, I also think that on multiple occasions he displayed a certain degree of heartlessness that is not befitting a person who has chosen to help sick animals as his career.

When I left my old endocrinologist, I started up at the Barbara Davis Center, with Dr. Ray Gutin. My diabetes has been under good control ever since. The center has an effective check-in system, allowing them to check you in, get your co-pay, test your A1C, check your weight and height, download the data from your monitor, and get you into an exam room, all within as little time as possible. Dr. Gutin is a big difference from my old doctor, too. Instead of constantly criticizing me, he recognizes when I’m doing a good job of self-care, and praises me for keeping my sugars under control. Additionally, the center runs all kinds of studies and has plenty of support for their patients. I feel better about my diabetes than I ever did before, now that I’m a patient at the Barbara Davis Center!

Growing up in unincorporated Jefferson County (also generically known as Littleton), I had little experience with businesses that were not chains. Angie’s, however, provided a non-chain Italian dining experience. Angie’s provides delicious food at good prices, with friendly service to boot; the weekday lunch specials are particularly noteworthy, as is their spectacular homemade spaghetti. I’ve also had the pleasure of seeing the business grow since I first discovered it, as it has moved into a larger, more accessible building.

Movies and music CDs can get expensive, so if you’re like me and you like having a large collection, you should check out Angelo’s. Angelo’s sells used and new DVDs and CDs at unbelievably low prices. I’ve never had any bad experiences with them, such as discs not playing properly, but I believe they have a one-week return policy. The service is also always very friendly and casual, even if the employees are typically rather alternative types.

An avid reader and an amateur book collector, I am always on the lookout for a new bookstore. A Bargain in Books, a bookstore in Old Englewood, is one of those hole-in-the-wall bookstores that is a veritable treasure trove! It’s the kind of used bookstore where the shelves go clear up to the ceiling and you need a stool to reach the books on the top shelves; it’s also the kind of used bookstore where the prices for old, collectible books are far cheaper than you would expect. Anyone who loves old, beautiful books, or simply loves to read, will feel like A Bargain in Books is heaven on earth!

Everybody’s done those tired old chain breakfast restaurants. Granted, bacon and eggs can really hit the spot, but you’ll never look at breakfast the same again after you visit Lucile’s. The Creole restaurant serves breakfast foods like you’ve never tasted them before: REAL French toast, grits, homestyle potatoes, thick juicy bacon, spicy Cajun sausage, and omelets dripping with cheese. If breakfast were like this every day, I’d never sleep through another one again!

Only a few months ago, my cat fell ill with a liver failure condition known as hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver. As I hadn’t had a consistent vet in quite some time, I took her to Alpine Animal Hospital simply because my parents had used them before. Right from the very beginning, both Cleo and I received the most caring treatment possible, from both the doctors and the women in the office. Although I chose to nurse Cleo at home instead of hospitalizing her, the vets – particularly Dr. Tim Ruggles, the young vet Cleo saw almost exclusively – supported me every step of the way. In fact, Dr. Ruggles called me every few days to find out how Cleo was progressing. After a month of force-feeding her, Cleo started eating and drinking on her own, and is now doing just fine. I don’t think Cleo and I could have pulled through as well as we did without the support of Dr. Ruggles and everyone else at Alpine Animal Hospital.
