It seems like the best Chinese restaurants are the little out-of-the-way, hole-in-the-wall places. My favorite I discovered only because I lived right across the street from it. Golden Plate II is a small restaurant, but likely to be around for a while because their prices are good and their lunch specials attract business from students at the nearby high school. They appear to be family owned; their food is the best Chinese food I’ve ever tasted, as well as the best value for your money, and the service is extremely friendly and fast. If there is any place you should at least try once, it’s Golden Plate II!

If you want something a different from the usual ice cream desserts, try gelato! This traditional Italian dessert is lighter than ice cream, both in calories and in taste. Gelato D'italia, located in Cherry Creek, is set up like an ice cream parlor, with tables to sit at while you savor your gelato, as well as more comfortable seating. Take it from an ice cream connoisseur – gelato is worth trying!

Almost seven years ago, I bought my cat from Denver Dumb Friends; he was on display in one of the cages in the front of Petsmart, and even though I preferred a kitten, I completely fell in love with him. Several years later, he went missing for a short time; while I was looking for him, one of the places I contacted was Denver Dumb Friends. They were incredibly helpful in assisting me with my search, filing a lost report and allowing me to look through the cats they had there. After I found my cat (he was trapped in a neighbor’s apartment while they went on vacation), they injected him with a microchip so that he would be on record if he got lost again. The assistance that Denver Dumb Friends provided makes me feel like I’d have a decent chance of getting my cats back if they were lost.

For those of you in Denver who collect dolls, the Denver Doll Emporium is worth checking out. Their stock ranges from old to brand new collectible dolls. The shop is owned by a mother and her two daughters, and is always a friendly and welcoming place to shop. The location, on old Pearl Street, is also a quaint place to shop, and maybe stop for lunch as well – make a day of it!

The Denver Book Mall is an excellent place to find used and collectible books. Because the store is large and features many different dealers, you’re guaranteed a wide variety of genres and prices. The staff – which I believe is made up of the individual dealers, alternating the days that each works – is also always very friendly and helpful, and the spacious interior of the building is visually appealing and welcoming.

When my boyfriend moved in with me several months ago, he didn’t want to have to move his heavy furniture himself. Instead, he hired Cowboy Moving to come on a Sunday morning. We’re pretty sure that by the time they arrived – which was nine o’clock in the morning – one of the movers had already been drinking pretty heavily, as he reeked of hard liquor. While my boyfriend didn’t see much of a problem with it, I couldn’t help but think of all of my beautiful antique furniture. Would I trust someone to move it if they had been drinking? Absolutely not! Moving is a business, and movers should act responsibly, which means not getting blitzed before work!

I’ve been enjoying ice cream since before I was even born, so I consider myself something of a connoisseur. By far the best chain ice cream place is Cold Stone – their ice cream is rich and satisfying, and their mix-ins are a unique idea that set them apart. For a nice touch, if you tip them they’ll sing a Cold Stone song!

Cobblestone Too is the perfect place to shop for furniture and antiques. The owner of the story is constantly buying out estates, so the stock is constantly changing. As a result, they need to move pieces through pretty quickly, so they are extremely open to bargaining – much more so than any conventional antique store. At prices the same or only a little more than thrift store prices, you can furnish your home with real antiques and high-quality furniture!

A number of years ago I bought a car stereo at Circuit City. I was told by the employee who sold me the deck that the maintenance plan would cover cleanings, as well as repairing any malfunctions that occurred. He specifically mentioned that the plan would replace buttons if they broke. After I’d had the deck for about eight or nine months, the slide switch that turned it on started to break off. I took the deck in for maintenance, but the Circuit City maintenance department accused me of breaking it, and said the plan did not cover button malfunctions. I went round and round with Circuit City on it, but they absolutely refused to repair the deck for me. As a result, I believe that Circuit City’s maintenance plans are a major rip-off, and I avoid the store entirely as a rule.

As an employee of Checker Auto for nearly a year, as well as a long-time customer, I’ve acquired quite a bit of experience with the company’s products. For the most part, I’d say you’re getting what you pay for: parts that are of much cheaper quality than you would get elsewhere. For example, I bought an alternator from Checkers, and had to replace it every year or every other year for the eight-and-a-half years that I owned the car. However, if the replacement is an easy one to make, the lifetime warranties make it worthwhile to keep replacing the part for free – especially with parts that go out frequently, such as brake pads. Also, if you plan on reselling the car soon, you probably don’t care how soon the replacement parts go out. For repairs that you don’t want to have to redo frequently, though, such as clutches or other major jobs, I recommend getting your parts elsewhere.
