I’ve been a 1stBank customer since I was old enough to have an account, and I’ve had the same checking account since I got my first job at 16 years old. I have always been treated well at 1stBank – I’ve never had any account problems, and I’ve found the bank to be very communicative in general. In fact, when a charge for my website went through from Canada, an employee of the bank called me to make sure the charge was valid, since it was out of the country! I’ve had no reason to be displeased with 1stBank’s service, and would recommend them to anyone else in a heartbeat.

Not too long ago, my boyfriend and I met up with some friends of ours at Patriot and Loyalist. We’d been told good things about this “colonial” bar and its food, so we were pretty disappointed when we saw it had changed. The signs on the table announced that its name had changed to something containing “Firehouse.” The remodeling was evidently not done, since about a quarter of the bar was blocked off and the tables shoved up against the windows. The service was pretty bad, too – there was only one waitress taking orders for the entire bar, and she left much to be desired. She had a habit of taking off before we could finish ordering, resulting in only part of our party getting their orders in. She didn’t check up on her customers, either, which made it even more difficult to get the rest of our order in. Although the food was good (my cheese and onion quesadilla was delicious) and drink specials were spectacular (the first drink order was two-for-one), you have to be willing to wait for a while if you’re going to order anything more than a first drink!

I can remember “back in the day” when my friends and I would hang out at Old Chicago, drinking water, snacking on appetizers, and playing trivia. The waiters were surprisingly tolerant of us back then. Now, of course, when I go there it’s for a drink or two and some food. The bar and restaurant also has some “Happy Hour” food and drink specials that are worth checking out.

Fox and Hound, located in the old TJ Maxx building across from Southwest Plaza, is a bar worth checking out. It’s spacious and comfortable inside, and the ventilation is pretty effective, so that the cigarette smoke doesn’t bother me as much as it usually does. The mixed drink menu is excellent, and the food is better than most bar food; but what’s REALLY cool about this bar is Tuesday night “Pint Nights.” Beer on tap is only two bucks a pint – including Guinness, which is normally fairly expensive. Although I think the bar is great any time of the week, it’s especially fun to go there on Tuesday nights and drink for less than half of what it would usually cost you!

This particular Walgreens, located at Kipling and Bowles, is an excellent pharmacy to use. It’s convenient, as it’s open 24 hours a day and has a drive-through pharmacy. The automated phone refill system is straightforward and easy to use, and they offer other options for your convenience, such as automatic refills and internet accounts. The pharmacy staff is also very friendly and helpful; over the past few years that I’ve used the pharmacy on a regular basis, I’ve gotten to know them pretty well, and have come to enjoy seeing a familiar face when I pick up my medications.

Turn of the Century is one of the few antique doll dealers in Denver; they also stock a selection of beautiful, high-quality antiques. Their dolls are rare treasures, almost always in mint or near-mint condition, and ranging from antique bisque and china-head dolls to Madame Alexander dolls from the 1950’s and newer. Turn of the Century also sells on eBay, providing doll collectors who are not based out of Denver the opportunity to purchase their beautiful dolls. If you are one of Denver’s doll collectors, or even just an antique-lover, it would be worthwhile to stop in and check this store out!

When my mom and I first started collecting dolls, we frequented the TLC Doll Hospital, making friends with the owners. Over time, though, we stopped shopping there as much, for a number of reasons: one, because out of the three repairs we had them do on our dolls, we were only even marginally pleased with one of them, and that one happened to be the simplest; and two, we quickly discovered that prices online (such as on eBay) were considerably cheaper, and the selection much better. However, the owners of TLC Doll Hospital took it personally that they weren’t getting as much business from us, and started to treat us rather rudely. Therefore, I have to say that not only is the quality of their doll repair questionable, the customer service is also dependent on how the owners feel about you, which is NOT how businesses are supposed to operate. If you collect dolls or require doll repairs, I suggest finding another place to take your business!

The Thrifty Scotsman is another antique and used furniture store worth taking note of. Although their stock is more vintage and overstock items than actual antiques, their prices are fairly good. I’ve found many treasures tucked away in the packed rooms of this store, and the employees are always friendly. If you’re used furniture shopping, this is a worthwhile place to check!
