There’s no doubt that the Denver Center for the Performing Arts monopolizes the performing arts in Denver. There are several theaters in this complex, each laid out a different way and made to hold a different size crowd. The complex has a fantastic variety of plays at any given time. Plus, the Denver Center Theatre Company usually has a “free play” the night before opening night – a dress rehearsal that they give out tickets for, starting when the box office opens that day at 4:30p.m. Make sure you get in line early, though, as people start to line up by early or mid afternoon!

When I was thinking of freelancing full time, I realized I needed a new computer, as my old computer was not going to be able to handle a full-time workload. Shopping around for computers, I was dismayed by every other store’s poor selection. However, within moments of shopping at CompUSA, I found what I was looking for: a tiny, highly portable computer that didn’t sacrifice speed or accessibility to achieve its size. The salespeople were extremely helpful, despite the fact that the computer was sold out – within an hour, they had me packed up and out the door with the floor model, an appropriate discount, and a free bottle of cleaner that the salesperson threw in to sweeten the deal (even though he was already guaranteed the sale). Their selection and service blew me away – I will definitely be shopping there again!

Recently, a new Caribou Coffee went in at the shopping center on the southeast corner of Belleview and Broadway. My boyfriend and I were excited, as the next closest Caribou was rather out of our way, and we both love Caribou’s coffee! My favorite is their chai, which has a rather unique, sugar-and-spice taste that I don’t often taste in other coffee shops’ chais. Last time, however, I had a turtle-flavored coffee, which was fantastic except for the nuts on the top of it (I don’t do nuts), and next time I plan on trying the caramel-flavored coffee – from what the employees were saying, it’s absolutely loaded with caramel, unlike the rather pitiful amount of caramel most coffee shops put in their “caramel” coffees.

I can remember the first movie I saw in the Bowles Crossing theater: THE LION KING, when I was probably about twelve. Back then, the theater was pretty new, so there was a lot of oohing and aahing when the heavy red velvet curtains closed and opened again for the previews. Of course, the theater isn’t as new now, and the seats are as comfortable as some of the newer theaters, but the classic styling of the theater is still fun to me.

I started shopping at this used bookstore when I was in my early teens, before remodeling efforts pushed them out of Southwest Plaza. Back then, I used to be in so frequently that I got to know the owners pretty well; they were always very friendly and helpful. Although I have less time to read these days, I still enjoy visiting their store from time to time. They have an excellent selection of books, so browsing their store is always very enjoyable.

A few years ago, a good friend of mine introduced me to BD’s, a restaurant right off of 16th Street Mall in Denver. The place has a fabulous system: you pick out the raw meats and veggies that you want in your stir-fry, take it to this huge round grill, and one of the cooks does it up for you while you watch. Although they have a one-bowl price, my favorite is the all-you-can-eat deal – that way, you feel free to experiment with your selections, and if you don’t like something you can just send it back and try something else. They also have a soup and salad bar, and I have to tell you, the tomato basil soup is to die for! BD’s is a fantastic place to eat, but make sure you have lots of room in your stomach when you go – you’ll need it all, trust me!

As much as I love Chipotle and Qdoba, the monotony of what they serve tends to get old after a while. If it does for you too, try Baja Fresh from time to time! Baja Fresh is a Mexican restaurant with more alternatives than the other chain Mexican restaurants, and all of their dishes are made with fresh ingredients. You really will be able to taste the difference!

Of all the cheap aftermarket auto parts stores, Auto Zone is the cheapest of them all. Nothing I have ever bought there has lasted like I thought it should. The store also seems to cater heavily to accessory purchases, such as colored bulbs and funky air fresheners; however, the colored bulbs I bought there lasted no better than anything else. You’re best off steering clear of this auto parts dealer!

About six months ago, I was grieved to see that they’d torn down the old Arby’s on Littleton Boulevard and Broadway. However, it soon became clear that they were simply building a new one – it took them a while, but eventually the new Arby’s was up and running. I went there the other day to check it out, and found that it was clean and well-staffed (even though the drive-through lane is set up rather strangely – you have to be on the lookout for it as soon as you enter the parkinglot).

The AMC 24 in Highlands Ranch is my absolute favorite theater to see movies at. I love the huge screens, and I love the many different movies to choose from. Also, being rather short, I like that there is enough of a step up between rows of seats that I never have to worry about having someone’s head blocking my view; to make the seats even more comfortable, the armrests fold back, so that you can snuggle with your date (or block them off by folding the armrest back down, if you want). Almost every movie I see, I see at that theater, so obviously I’d recommend it to any other movie-goer, as well!
