When I walk into the China House Restaurant the staff and owners are so welcoming and accommodating that I feel like I have just walked into their home for a family dinner. Every dish they have ever served me over the years has been scrumptious. Their specialty is Mandarin and Szechwan Cuisine. They are open for lunch and dinner, and you can order food to go.
Every time I drive by their restaurant the parking lot is full. And this is not a small feat, for the town is no more than a few cross streets, a gas station, post office, hardware store, IGA grocery store, and a few businesses. If you blinked you would miss it. But, there sits the China House Restaurant full of people. So, I know we are not the only regular customers. We drive from Apple Valley to Lucerne Valley (about 20 minutes) just to eat Chinese food at the China House Restaurant. We haven't found anything else in our Victor Valley area comparable to this Chinese restaurant. We have taken many of our friends and family to this restaurant, and that is why we would recommend it to you.
We use to be from the Bay Area of Northern California where you have the great Chinese food of China Town in San Francisco and the surrounding area, so we feel like we have some idea of good Chinese food when we come across it. I don't believe you will be disappointed if you get the chance to stop at the China House.
You will be given warmed napkins after your appetizers. The staff will be coming by to make sure you are contented and happy with the meal. Since they are so friendly, they grab a chance to stop, talk, and laugh with you. You are served warmed tea. You may even get an extra cookie for dessert.

You need to head to the San Bernardino Mountains to spend some delightful time in Big Bear Lake City in Southern California. It is cooler than the desert in the summer time, and has plenty of snow in the winter time for playing in the snow. Check out www.bigbearinfo.com for a list of all of the recreational activities, lodging, and annual events in the area.
First, take a scenic drive around the lake, then make a reservation to ride on tour boat like the Pirate Ship to tour the lake just like a pirate with a treasure chest and a bottle of rum, soda, or beer . If you have your own boat, they have several boat docks to slip your boat out to float in the beautiful blue waters of the lake, which also includes a floating bathroom for those that need a "potty break".
All year round there is water and snow activities at Alpine Slide/Water Slide at Magic Mountain. It includes a double water slide and an authentic bobsled ride. Also water tube rides in the snow in the winter time, and an 18 hole miniature golf course, go-carts, and snack house. Check out www.alpineslideat magicmountain.com for a description and pictures of the activities at Magic Mountain.
In the Village is a number of shops with country decor, books, art, and Christmas decorations. You can find plenty of excellent restaurants to dine in, like Paoli's Italian Restaurant with delicious pizzas, Kujo's Cafe with fresh sandwiches and salads, and Denny's & IHOP for a great breakfast. You can visit many antique shops in the area as well as bowl in the local bowling alley and taste beer at the Big Bear Mountain Brewery.
During the summer months they have Friday night concerts, nature nights at the Big Bear Discovery Center, charter fishing, and hiking trails to explore. In the winter there are the ski resorts to enjoy skiing and snowboarding as well as sledding and snow ball fights. Christmas in The Village is fun for the kids as they sit on Santa's lap to ask Santa for gifts, enjoy the Christmas lights glowing on the trees and street lights, and view the Christmas decorations in the windows. Check out rentals for snowboards at www.blauersnowboards.com
For vacations they have plenty of lodging in the area. This lodging includes a variety of lodges, bed and breakfast inns, cabins, chalets, resorts, vacation rentals, condos, and log homes. This includes all different price ranges at each location, with the best prices in the Fall and Spring. Check out BigBear Vacations.com for real estate services and cabin rentals.
Big Bear Lake is a great location to go for a romantic get-a-way, family vacation, or just a day in the mountains away from the city life. We live only 45 minutes away from Big Bear City and drive up to the lake as often as we can throughout the year!

We are in such need for good restaurants in our area. As the businesses on Apple Valley and Bear Valley Road keep improving with new and bigger stores and shopping areas, we still have this antiquated restaurant called Johnnie D's sitting on the corner of these two roads. It use to be a Denny's restaurant. And it was one of the best Denny's restaurant in the area at that time. Since it has had new owners, and the name was changed to Johnnie D's, it has been declining in looks, cleanliness, taste, and prices. The prices are getting higher and the quality of the food is getting worse. It is definitely time for a complete overhaul of this restaurant or a replacement.
I have seen dirty floors before, but this restaurant has outdone them all. From the time I set my foot in the front door to the time I was seated in a booth, all I saw was dirt, papers, food, straws, etc. on the floor. It was disgusting. When the waitress came to our table to greet us she picked up the paper from a straw laying on the floor beside us. One table was completely cleaned off and ready for the next customer, but the trash and debris under the table was still there.
They do serve breakfast all day, which is what my husband ordered. He figured they couldn't ruin breakfast. And he was right - his food was just fine he said. My husband said he would give this restaurant a "C" rating.
But, I ordered a salmon plate for my dinner. It didn't even taste like salmon. Where was the pink? It was a nasty brown color, more like a tuna steak. The bread was a dry crunchy piece of French bread. I needed margarine to make it moist. But, then the margarine was so whipped up I didn't even taste any butter flavor at all. My baked potato was okay, but so dry it needed sour cream to moisten it. The vegetables were undercooked. I like to have "some: softness to them. I give this restaurant a "D" rating.
The greeter was grumpy and unfriendly, but the waitress was quite nice and helpful. She is the one that made the experience at this restaurant more tolerable.
Obviously we will not be eating at this restaurant again. We had been here a few times before, when there were more customers and a cleaner atmosphere, but the food was just mediocre. I felt I needed to visit it again before I gave it a review on Judy's Book. I do not recommend this restaurant at all. Skip on down to the freeway and eat at Mimi's Cafe, Applebee's, or Marie Callenders instead. Even though I am not that crazy for Applebee's, it is 10 times better than Johnnie D's.

When we traveled to Big Bear for the weekend we use to always have breakfast at IHOP. I don't care for some International House of Pancake restaurants, and this is one of those I don't like. I use to, but not anymore. It is not popular anymore and there isn't a wait when you arrive. That should tell you something. Also, the restaurant has a B rating. The staff is not friendly. The waitresses are not attentive. The decor is still the same, but the owners are not keeping the restaurant clean. The bathrooms are not clean. And the food is not suitable for eating. I hate to think what is going on in the kitchen! The new owners are not interested in satisfying their customers. They ignore you. They have no interest in improving the restaurant and don't want to hear your suggestions. We will never go here again until it has new owners and is improved to the quality it use to be. There are many other excellent restaurants you can go to for breakfast in Big Bear, but please ignore IHOP. You will be completely unsatisfied and wished you had never spent any money there when you are done.
For a resort community like Big Bear Lake, it is too, too bad that IHOP has gone down hill. It is located right as you are entering The Village, which is an excellent location for the tourists who have come into town. You can eat and then stroll right down the street to see the shops in The Village. The restaurant building takes up the whole corner. This land could be used for something a lot better than this IHOP!
And, here I use to think this was the best IHOP I had ever been to.

Whenever you are in Big Bear Lake, CA you might want to check out Firehouse Ribs Etc. on Moonridge Road. Any barbecued item you could want is at this restaurant. You can get pork ribs, beef short ribs, chicken, beef brisket, pork butt, turkey, and hot links. These meats are served with your choice of 3 items: baked beans, cole slaw, fries, potato salad, sweet potato, corn on the cob, rice, collard greens, or macaroni and cheese. You will not leave this restaurant hungry. You know how they always say the best eating is in a firehouse. I believe they are right. At this firehouse you get some real delicious food, drinks, and desserts.

We have a new market in Victorville, CA called Vallarta Supermarket. They have the best prices in produce, meat and seafood. For example, watermelon for 9 cents a pound, fresh ears of corn (6 for a $1.00), or chicken drumsticks for 49 cents a pound. When you go inside the market the displays of food are plentiful and fresh looking. I have never seen a market with so much produce, meats, and seafood as this one has.
Vallarta is so huge that they have a whole cornier for food stands, Mexican drinks and salsas, and some small stores along the wall. On the other side of the store, all along one whole side of the market is counters of meats, marinated meats, seafood, and deli salads.
When you walk into this restaurant you feel like you made a complete jump over the border to Mexico in but a few seconds. (Pinatas, flower pots, toys, Mexican candies, tacos, tamales, fruit drinks, salsas, cactus, beans, rices, Mexican sodas and Mexican breads). You really need to visit this store at least once just for the experience of it.
People talk Spanish and English. The parking lot is always full. And there is great deals going on every day. Where else could you get avocados for 4 for a $1.00 instead of a $1.00 each?

Paoli's Italian Country Kitchen is the best Italian restaurant in town. We drive 45 minutes to Big BEar Lake just to take our company up to Big Bear to the Village for shopping then a pizza or Italian dinner at Paoli's Restaurant afterwords. Every single person who have taken there has loved the place and want to go back again on their next visit.
This restaurant is right in the heart of The Village on the corner of Pine Know and Village Drive. They can accommodate groups up to 150 people. We have been there when the waitresses have handled a large group and the small tables as well without a hitch. We all get great service. There is indoor and outdoor eating. You might prefer indoors when there is snow on the umbrellas during the winter!
Our favorite is their pizza. That is what we order the most often. They carry other delicious meals of pasts, seafood, and chicken. Their is a full bar available. The decor is adorable. This place is always packed, but I have never had to stand in line once, for they have lots of rooms with lots of tables. On Saturdays they are open until midnight. And we have been known to be there that late. Stopped in for a late night snack after seeing a movie across the street.
We love this restaurant. My husband even took one of his co-workers from Texas up to Paoli's for lunch, even though the drive would last 45 minutes up there and 45 minutes back again. Corey enjoyed the food immensely, and understood why we recommended it so much. His said that on his next visit to California, he would like to bring his wife and take her to Paoli's for dinner and explore The Village.

I have eaten at this restaurant more than once. I find the food mediocre and the establishment is ancient. Sometimes it has been the only restaurant open late in the evening, so back we go again, even though we would care not to. It food really isn't bad but it isn't excellent either.
It has a full bar with micro beers, TV's for the sports fans, and a happy hour on M-F, 3-6 pm. Senor Hog's is opened daily for lunch and dinner. We always order one of their Mexican dinners and haven't been crazy about any one of them. So, I can't even recommend a dish above another. They also serve ribs, steaks, and seafood.
If you have a sports fan in you group though this is a perfect hide-a-way to watch the NFL football games in the Fall, the basketball playoffs, or the Dodgers and Angels battling it out.
The value of the meals is fair. The service is excellent, and you are given much attention, for there is never very many patrons in the restaurant at any one time when I have been there. I would say the bar is the business place in Senor Hogs.
As of January 2007, this restaurant has gone out of business. There is a new restaurant in the same building. I haven't had a chance to try it out to see if the food and decor have been improved on. It still looks like they prepare steaks and Mexican food.

The new owner of this fine restaurant in Big Bear Lake, CA named his restaurant after his dog, Kujo. This restaurant has been a 17 year tradition of Big Bear's, known as BLT Restaurant before.
The new owners are doing just as fantastic of a job as BLT owners before them did. They still have their good salads and hamburgers. The restaurant is known for its famous humongous sandwiches for many years. The new owners have even expanded on the menu with Kujo's quiche's, sandwiches, hand-pressed burgers, and special salads. They do serve wine and beer also.
I do believe the prices are much higher, but the food is well worth it. The owner came by and greeted each of his patrons and welcomed us to his restaurant and answered any of our questions. That is how I found out the restaurant was named after his dog.
It is open for lunch everyday. Opens for breakfast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 am to 11.am.
Opens for dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 6 to 10 pm. I've only gone there for lunches and have enjoyed every sandwich and side dish I have ever ordered from there. By the time I drive from Apple Valley to Big Bear it is closer to lunch time than dinner. That is because I am not a morning person. I sure wouldn't mind trying out their restaurant for breakfast the next time we stay there over-night.
You can even bring your laptop and enjoy their free wireless internet service!

The only reason I go to this grocery store is they double the value of your coupons. While shopping here with coupons I can lower my grocery bill lower than anywhere else. I now am always on the search for coupons in newspapers, magazine, and on the internet. Ralphs has their own site to print coupons for their store.
I have one particular item that I like to buy at this store. That is the good sandwiches they make in their deli department. They are delicious, inexpensive, and fresh.
I have several things I dislike about this store. They only have two to three checkers available at a time. The meat department is small with few choices. When they have a sale on the steaks for 50% off, that is when you'll find me buying meat there. The produce section is expensive. I only buy the produce that is on sale. I think the store could be kept cleaner than it is.
Again, as I said before, the only reason I shop at this store on a regular basis is because of the double coupons. If they stopped doing that I would go elsewhere.
