Tell your greeter at i Cugini you definitely want to dine on the weather-shielded patio -- from where, across Ocean Avenue, you'll have an excellent view of the ocean, and the Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica Pier. At lunch, I'd suggest the Pizza Margherita ($10.95). There are other toppings, inlcuding prosciutto and shrimp, and a thick crust version too (up to $12.95). If you're in a more gustatory (and spending) mood, you'll want to try the Golden Trout oven-roasted Adriatic Style ($18.95). Pizza and some other dishes are priced the same at dinner. There are a lot of good things to be said about i Cugini -- the consistently good food, the home baked bread, the competent service, the gently bubbling fountain on the patio and, of course, that seductive view.of the ocean, especially at sunset.. And it's minutes from the Promenade.

If you want to buy a balance ball -- an essential for core training -- Acology Health Products has a variety of sizes. It also has a selection of air pumps. I recommend the pedal pump because it's more efficient. The store also carries resistance bands -- of varying degrees of resistance and cut to your desired length -- and the thingamajig you loop the bands through and anchor in a door crack so you can do your exercises. The help is helpful, and you get free mini-Tootsie Rolls at the checkout counter.

If you need medical attention after hours during the week or on the weekend, try Santa Monica Bay Physicians. You don't have to make an appointment -- just show up. During my emergency visit, I had a good feeling about the place from the moment I walked in. I was treated courteously at the front desk -- a rare occurrence at most medical centers, I find -- and didn't wait more than five minutes before being able to see a doctor and get an anxiety-relieving diagnosis. The urgent-care center has X-ray equipment for quick checks on possible bone fractures. Hours are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

If you've got a question about Reston, or just want to know some more about the place, this should be your first stop. I may be prejudiced, as a former board member, but the volunteers and philanthropists who are part of this nonprofit organization are totally dedicated to providing a wide, high window to Reston's present, past and future. The Trust's Museum, right next to the drug store on Lake Anne Plaza, have loads of fascinating material about America's most successful new community. The shop on the premises offers all kinds of souvenirs, many of them lovingly hand-crafted.

I like to go to Joe's when I'm feeling good -- or at least when I want to feel good. The buzz at the tables is about people who expect to sell a script, have sold one, got a green light or, if they are on the producer side, have lined up some limited hang-out financing or are confident it'll happen. You will not find any heads drooping toward the white linen tablecloth. The patio is cramped, but that means you can eavesdrop on all the success stories that are being retailed. At least, you'll say to yourself, "I'm next." The food, especially the astonishingly inexpensive lunch specials, which include dessert, is...perfect. Ditto the service. The bar is so tiny that one person can feel as if he or she is sitting on a throne. Valet parking in back.

If you need a mail service -- everything from a personal box to receiving/forwarding to FedEx/UPS pickup/delivery -- I recomend Santa Monica Mailhouse. The personal-box rates vary depending on your need, from about $15.60 a month to $25.66, which I think is fair if you are dependent on getting important mail. I've been using Mailbox with happy results for two and a half years. Partners Mark and Chris -- one or the other -- are almost always on the premises, so accountability is a given. The personal mail boxes can be accessed 24/7 with a key to that area of the operation. Add-ons include magazines and greeting cards, and letterhead/brochure/flyer, etc. printing. There's parking in the back if the metered spaces in front are occupied. (Don't try to outwit the meter police!) Getting down to the nitty-gritty, you could do a lot worse than a 310 area code or a 90401 ZIP Code.

You won't find any "penny candy" at the Candy Baron, but the bins full of taffy, candy necklaces, Beeman's gum, Cinnamon Tooth Picks and Red Licorice Pipes, for sweet starters, will very likely weaken your resistance to the inflation-adjusted prices. Besides, in this shrink-wrapped era, where else can you wield a scoop to select what you want? This is a good place to stock up before you go to any of the nearby movie houses, whose candy prices will make you think you found a bargain at the Candy Baron.

When the handle broke on my well-traveled satchel-style briefcase, I thought that was the end of this old favorite, which I've lugged half way around the world. After stops at two repair shops, I was referred to Ben's Luggage & Repair Center. Mason Massih, the proprietor, took a look at the handle-less briefcase and said, "$35." I swallowed hard, but then realized that a new pigskin satchel -- if I could find it -- would cost over $100. I nodded my head, and Mason pulled over a bucket of handles and picked one out. It was a close match for the broken one. In a few minutes, the briefcase had a new handle, and Mason also put some rivets in key places so I could carry a load of books without the bottom of the case dropping out. After about 15 minutes, my briefcase was good for another 100,000 miles. Thanks, Mason, it was worth every dollar.

When you walk into Busy Bee Hardware, you enter a dearly beloved past. I wasn't certain whether the wrench I was looking at would work on my car bumper. The clerk said let's outside and see! I'll bet Busy Bee has 99 percent of what the average hardware shopper is looking for. You may not see it yourself, but the help will pull it down from a shelf or out of a bucket. If they don't have it, they'll tell you where you can find it.
