I never drew a blank at Horn Autos in downtown Herndon. They've got everything on their many shelves, or they'll get it for you sometimes same day.

When I dine out, I'm partial to attentive service, white-linen tables and, most of all, absolutely fresh food inventively prepared. So that means that the Market Street Bar & Grill at the Hyatt Regency in Reston Town Center is on my short list as an old but not doddering reliable. At dinner, I love the Tuna Timbale or Lobster and Grits, and for breakfast, it's almost always Pacakes with Bananas.

I bought an upgraded cellphone at the Sprint Nextel at 631 Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica mainly because the store was convenient (on the edge of downtown and a nice walk from where I live). But the store has proved to have solid and reasonably fast service. I took my Samsung A920 back in because I couldn't upload photos from it to my computer. I had to wait 10 minutes for service, which I don't mind if the problem is solved, which it was. Turned out my cell didn't have the memory card that was supposed to come with it. The store didn't hassle me, which it could have. It installed a card, and now I'm happily uploading photos.

There are Jerry's Famous Delis all over greater Los Angeles, but the one in West Hollywood, at 8701 W. Beverly Blvd. (near San Vicente Boulevard), is just a couple of blocks from the celebrity gawking hot spot -- N. Robertson Boulevard. First, Jerry's: The atmosphere is basic formica and chrome. The lean pastrami sandwich, I found, was too dry -- the regular probably would have been just right. My partner went for the corned brisket, which was juicy. Half sandwiches, enough to fill you up, run from about $8.85 to $10.95. You might want to plunk down another $3 or $4, and get a whole sandwich, and take the other half home. Skip dessert, and instead go for a walk down N. Robertson Boulevard, the cross street two blocks to the west. Less than a block down Robertson you're in the celebrity hot zone centered around The Ivy restaurant, at No. 113. You'll know you're there when you see the hovering SUVs where paparazzi wait for the right movie star or other high-watt celebrity to step out of The Ivy, or maybe in or out of the fashion boutiques that line both sides of Robertson for a couple of blocks. If you count your walk as dessert, lunch at Jerry's Famous is a worthy expedition.

If you're on the Third Street Promenade, and you're hungry but on the run, Stefano's, at the Arizona Street corner, has pizza by the slice (thin crust with a variety of toppings and thick crust with cheese) and outdoor tables from where you can watch the always-interesting parade of people while you munch away. The pizza is crispy light and garnished with just the right amount of cheese on top of the tomato sauce so you don't get a gooey gop.

If you're planning to visit the newly reopened and renovated Will Rogers ranch house in Pacific Palisades, http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=24174 a good place to dine nearby is Mort's Deli. It seems every LA deli is an institution, with its celebrity regulars. Mort's apparently is no exception. There's a great story about an elderly Marlon Brando dining there with his sister Jocelyn (he had an omelet) and chatting with proprietor Mort Farberow. http://brando.crosscity.com/Brando/Main.aspx?Page=Articles/Lion.ascx Mort's outdoor tables are a great place to laze away an afternoon, especially if you've just come from an expedition to Will Rogers State Historic Park, http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=626 where the ranch house is located, off Sunset Boulevard..

The eclectic, shabby genteel interior of John O'Groat's restaurant, where the only ambient lighting comes from dim wall sconces, might make you initially wary about what will come out of the kitchen. But then you notice the main room's tables are almost fully occupied, and business looks good at the huge, U-shaped counter in the room to the right and at the tables in the other room to the left, and you think maybe you didn't make a wrong choice for lunch after all. You didn't. The fish and chips are done just right, with a light batter on the fluffy Icelandic haddock. Apart from the fish and chips and potato cakes, most of the menu seems solidly American, with some Mexican seasoning. You can order off the breakfast menu for lunch, which, judging from the plump pancakes stacked on plates at nearby tables, many diners do. A trip to John O'Groat's, at 10516 W. Pico Blvd., a block from S. Beverly Glen Boulevard, also gives you a chance to browse the rich mosaic of non-chain specialty shops on Pico.

I take my LA Times to the Starbuck's on Montana and 7th Street a couple mornings a week, but I don't crack open much more than the sports and opinion sections. My preoccupation is the dogs that other customers bring. There are little bitty dogs, medium-sized ones and big and very big ones. All the dogs seems very friendly and well cared for. Tied to the newspaper racks, they patiently wait for their masters' return from the order lines, sometimes lapping up water from the bowl that Starbuck's employees put out on the sidewalk. When they return, the masters, sometimes, feed their dogs bits of scones or other breakfast pastries. Or just pat them on the head and tell them to be good. And the dogs, whatever their size and breed, respond with what I guess is dog thankfulness. It's a nice experience to begin your day. Oh, I almost forget, the coffee and pastries are fine.
