Many of the great works in this still-intimate museum, despite a major expansion, were lovingly and sometimes shrewdly acquired by the institution's founder, Duncan Phillips, who is credited with introducing modern art to America. This is an especially good time to visit the Phillips because 60 of its masterworks, including Renoir's "Luncheon of the Boating Party," have been reinstalled after a four-year tour to museums elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. Coinciding with the reinstallation, is the reopening of the relocated Rothko Room in the Phillips' Sant Building. Mark Rothko's four large color field paintings are positioned exactly as they were in the former, identically sized space -- "to overwhhelm the walls, saturating the room with color and sensation," according to the museum.

Gentrified Bucktown is filling with restaurants as well as boutiques and other small shops, and one of the best cafes is this charming double storefront, whose intimate, chandeliered dining room holds only 51. Chef Charlie Socher, who was a professor of economics in his earlier career, apprenticed at two highly rated restaurants in France. He describes his Matou menu as "bourgeoisie" -- a hybrid of classic and country French cuisine. C'est magnifique!

A bit of Florence on Pacific Coast Highway? That's exactly what you'll find at this popular, family-owned -and -operated establishment. There are home region dishes like Ossobuco alla Florentina (center cut veal shank loin), but also dishes from other regions. Family groups give the restaurant a festive atmosphere. A good dining choice.

After a a day at the beach, this is the place to talk about all the fun and whatever else happened. It's usually crowded, but the wait service doesn't ignore or forget you. The electric ambience is just what you'd expect in a popular bistro The well-prepared and -presented dishes include Pan Roasted King Salmon, Marinated Flat Iron Steak and Seafood Paella, all priced in the low $20s, and a few in the high teens. The Bistro Bar offers appetizers at half price between 4 and 7:30 p.m.

After 5 o'clock or so, this is bustling place, especially at the efficiently managed bar. There are some small, high-chaired tables a few feet from the bar that keep you in the hot zone, and many other tables in the cooler zones farther away. The food is basic American, and good enough, especially if you're tired from several hours of malling at Fashion Island, or coming out of the multiplex.

I love this modest, comfortable little place, where the food is always reliably good, and the service especially so. It's a good place to go on the second date. I'm partial to the spaghetti and meat balls. Dinner and glass of wine for two and tip comes in under $50.

You feel pampered from the time you push through the front door of the top-of-the-line resort and spal. You can look out to the nearby Pacific from your suit balcony. There's a garden to get lost in, a superb restaurant -- the 15th Street Bar & Grill -- and, of course, the Spa Del Mar for the ultimate in body and facial pampering and toning. Very expensive. You might want to schedule your stay when the fabled Del Mar Racetrack is open -- from July 19 to Sept. 6 (closed Tuesdays).

This is the local emporium for grocery shopping, especially for prepared foods. It's isn't inexpensive, but it's all top quality. The best buys are probably the fruit and produce. If time is money for you, then maybe you won't mind paying premium prices for special prepared foods like sesame-crusted salmon and couscous salads. Be careful with your portion sizes, and you'll hold the price down. The fried chicken is reasonably priced, and very tasty. If organic ingredients are important to you, this is the place to go.

This place is pricey, but unbeatable for the freshest and biggest varieties of fish and seafood. You can keep your bill from skyrocketing by being careful how much you order -- especially at $11 or $12 a pound. In other words, for dinner for four, settle on portions that don't weigh over 6 oz. each. There's lots of parking on both sides of this often-packed store. Don't forget to reach for your customer ticket when you enter the store. And pick up a lemon or two at the checkout counter for garnishes if you don't have them at home.
