I took my roommate out to dinner last month to celebrate her upcoming move to Italy, so of course I had to choose my favorite Italian restaurant at which to dine. Mondello's owners are both native Italians, and I have it on good authority that there is an actual nona in the kitchen directing the cooking. They make their own pasta, the sauces are fresh and tasty, and their bruchetta is to die for. Their decor is charming and the service excellent. Try the gnocchi!

I was a total hater of Chipotle on the Ave when it first opened-- how could I not be, seeing as how they replaced my beloved Denny's? However, I was lured in one year by their annual "free food for students" day and I've been a devoted Chipotle fan ever since (yes I'm a sucker for advertising). Their burritos are ENORMOUS and good for about two meals. Their carne asada is delicious; and the guacamole, though a tad expensive, is as good as any I make at home. Show your UW ID and get a free drink.

I'm tempted to try and count the number of extrordinary hangover breakfasts I've had at the Kona Kitchen, but I don't want to get a headache. Let me just state for the record that the breakfast experience here is second to none. The age-old dilemma of "do I want an omelette or pancakes?" is solved by offering pancakes OR toast with your delicious omelette, and then they go ahead and throw in perfect hash browns, just to be that bitchin. Their bloody marys are wonderful, their hot chocolate comes with sprinkles (genius!), and their service is totally friendly and down-to-earth. And who doesn't want to dine in a restaurant with nearly every available inch of wallspace covered in signed celebrity photographs, including Chuck Norris and Connie Chung? That's right-- nobody. Everyone belongs at the Kona Kitchen.

If you're one of those slobs that still lumps Target in with Wal-Mart and K-Mart, it's time you took a drive on up to Northgate. In the past few years, Target has had the facelift of the century and is now one of those places that people like me can spend 4 hours a week in and be perfectly happy. Need laundry detergent, a kicky pair of shoes, and the newest brand of whitening toothpaste? No problem. Target has EVERYTHING. I actually heard a girl in the picture frame aisle say to her grumpy boyfriend, "Stop whining! You're ruining my Target experience!" I couldn't agree more-- Target is one of the joys of my life. Don't miss the dollar section right as you walk in on the top floor of the Northgate target-- you will undoubtedly find something you absolutely need.

I was told about Diamond Nails by a friend who learned of it from a friend of hers, and since I started going there, I've referred about 10 girlfriends of my own. The pedicures are cheaper than anywhere else I've seen, and they have all the ingredients of a successful guilty pleasure: massage chairs, gossip magazines, gentle aestheticians, and E! on the overhead TV. Make a reservation if you're planning on going after work; they get busy in the evenings.

Nana's Soup House is the ideal Seattle restaurant-- the food is great, the service is friendly, and their soups are exactly what we all crave on the 360 days that it rains in our fair city. I especially like the potato soup; they serve it with a hearty piece of delicious bread. Also appreciated are the cut lemons for ice water and the private booths.

I bought a few pairs of boots a while back and soon realized that, unless I lowered the heels on all of them, they would be banished to the back of my closet for their extreme lack of comfort. I took them to Swanson's Shoe Repair on 45th to see if they could shave down the heels. The job was completed quickly and at a fair price, and it saved these three pairs of shoes from a lonely life of back-closet exile! I wear them all the time now, and they are much more comfortable.

Cedars Restaurant is my favorite U-District restaurant, hands-down. Their chicken tikka masala with garlic nan absolutely cannot be topped. Add in friendly service and a cool atmosphere, and it almost entirely makes up for the usually-long waits for tables. A great place to meet friends and have a delicious meal.

Western Co 24 hour donut shop is God's gift to Seattle. It's nestled amongst the holy trinity of a 76 station, a Subway, and a tobacco shop, but its skeezy location just makes this diamond in the rough sparkle all the more. They have a dazzling selection of donuts, their apple fritters have gigantic chunks of delicious apples in them, and their service is amazing. They even sell cartons of milk-- very smart. The donuts are cheap, the kind proprietor allows hobos to hang out inside on cold nights (but they're nice hobos and wax philosophical after 2am), and somehow, the donuts are fresh and warm even in the middle of the night. Who knew perfection comes in glazed, old-fashioned, or chocolate?

Cafe Solstice is a super popular coffeshop on the Ave, and it's always teeming with cooler-than-thou hipster UW students. Though I like the idea of Solstice, I just can't fall in love with its actual existence. The service is ehhh, the chai is watery, and about 85% of the clientele (and 95% of the baristas) are way too cool for school. Once when a friend ordered a chai tea, the barista said, "Well, chai actually means tea, so you just ordered a tea tea" and had that snotty "I can't believe you are actually in my coffeeshop" look on his face. I don't know about you, but I usually pass up a heaping dose of condescension with my morning drip.
