If you are in Washington, you must visit the National Museum of American History. This museum is one of the many Smithsonians in the DC area, which means free admission and absolutely fantastic exhibits. You'll find everything from Mr. Roger's sweater and Archie Bunker's chair to gowns worn by many First Ladies. The traveling exhibits have ranged from the history of computers to a tribute to paint-by-numbers. You'll need most of a day if not a full day to visit, but no need to hurry. It's free!

My wife swears by Aldi for our basic shopping. Although much of it is hit or miss, dairy staple items like sliced cheese, yogurt, milk, and eggs are all really cheap. We have found that we really like their wine label Winking Owl, and for $2.49 a bottle, it's a steal! Make sure you have cash or a debit card here, as you can't use a credit card or check. You also have to bag your own groceries and either provide your own bag or buy some from them. Still, considering the money you save, it's worth it

This Caribou is located conveniently across the street from Millennium Park and is where my wife and I often stop when we need a refreshment break while in the city. It's a pretty small coffee shop, but service is quite speedy as a result of the constant tourist business. Drinks here are around the same price as Starbucks, but you won't find any Italian wording-- it's small, medium, and large! I really like their chill-outs, especially the oreo mint one. A note about this Caribou: if you need to use the restroom, you'll need to get a key from an employee.

After seeing Rachel Ray review this restaurant on her food show, we decided to give it a shot one weekend. We weren't disappointed one bit and can't wait to go back again! The atmosphere is kitschy diner-meets-your mom's kitchen with plenty of stuff to look at on the walls, vintage toys, and quirky antiques on display. The front room is pretty tiny, but there's a large back room and outdoor patio, so don't panic if you see the place is packed. The food is fantastic, so much so that they were out of fried chicken by the time we got there! The ribs were tasty, as was the veggie lasagna my wife ordered. Don't forget to end your dinner with their famous Twinkie tiramisu! Great, friendly service that doesn't rush you!

I took my wife to Victor's Cafรฉ for our first date, and we weren't disappointed by the food or the atmosphere. It's prime location in the Inner Harbor makes for an excellent view of the sunset, so make dinner reservations accordingly. The only downside, which hopefully has been rectified by now is the lack of insulation from sound pollution. Our entire meal was "serenaded" by a Poison concert in the nearby pavilion-- our water glasses pulsed along to the rhythm of the bass guitar. Still, service was great, and their selection of Italian dishes and seafood was fantastic!

This Brew-Haha coffee shop is located in a prime spot for students attending the University of Delaware. If you're a local, the college vibe in this cafe might detract from the atmosphere, but they serve up delicious coffee drinks, including a milky way latte/mocha that is just fantastic. The sandwiches are a bit expensive, but they are all made-to-order and quite tasty. If you're looking for a quiet respite from a hectic day, try Brewed Awakenings across the street instead.

I attended my cousin's wedding reception last summer at Butterfield Country Club, and I must say that it is an elegant and beautiful location. There's an outdoor patio also available for rental, which is great if you're considering a cocktail hour before dinner. The room we were in had a ton of floor-to-ceiling windows and the attached patio doubled as a smoking "room." The main bar has plush leather furniture. The catering from the Country Club was delicious, and service was attentive. Overall, a very pleasant and luxurious spot for a reception.

Timothy's on the Riverfront is a good place to stop and grab a burger if you're looking to rest after some outlet shopping. The fare is your standard wings-suds-and-spuds, but portions are pretty hearty. Prices are fairly reasonable, and they almost always have printable coupons and specials on their website. This place gets pretty crowded around 5 and during the weekends, but service is pretty fast during the lunch hour.

Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant in Newark both benefits and suffers from its prime location in a college town. On the plus side, Iron Hill gets a fairly regular college crowd and their restaurant is almost always full. Sadly though, many of the finer aspects of a brew pub are lost on the beer guzzling crowd, so the restaurant feels a little out of place. Still, the food is generally pretty tasty albeit expensive for being standard upscale microbrew fare. I suggest ordering heavy appetizers and sampling their beer but going elsewhere for dinner. A note of caution: parking here is pretty much only street and metered.

Iron Hill Brewery is a decent brewpub with several locations in the Delaware area. This large, two-story restaurant and bar is located on the Riverfront and gets a good deal of business from the city and adjacent outlet mall. Prices here are a bit high, but the food, atmosphere, and beer are all reliably good. Don't expect huge portions, but you should be able to rely on an interesting seasonal/specialty brew on tap. My wife and I enjoy getting the Southwestern egg rolls, and she raves about their pizza.
