If you are looking for a great way to complete your china pattern or crystal collection, look no farther than Mikasa. This outlet, located in the Danada Square shopping area near Potbelly and Starbucks, has a large selection of merchandise at less than retail cost. Their seasonal merchandise is especially discounted, and their occasional sales on outlet merchandise can be downright cheap. Overall, a fun store to browse, and you just might find a replacement for that broken crystal goblet from Thanksgiving.

Although I never really had a strong opinion of Carson Pirie Scott, having dealt more with its sister store Bergners, I have yet to be impressed by the quality or price of their merchandise. My wife, an avid bargain hunter, loathes this place, claiming it's poorly organized and overpriced. After spending close to hour helping her locate a plain white blouse without an associate in sight makes me think she might not be too far off. For the most part, you can find similar stock at Sears, Macy's, or Marshall Field's, but at least there you get what you pay for.

Von Maur is the department store for people who aren't that concerned with cost. Granted, you will have a first-rate experience while hunting for your $200 sweater, but is it worth it? My wife and I did some browsing in the store, but we just couldn't justify the price tags. Overall, the pianist, huge bathrooms with lounges, and mirrored walls give a grand impression, but I found the atmosphere to be more pretentious than luxurious.

My wife and I enjoy spending an occasional afternoon at the Chicago Premium Outlets, which are conveniently located right off I-88 in Aurora. Although you'll see cars fighting for spaces at the entrance, if you follow the road around the complex, there's plenty of parking in the rear with hardly any competition for spot hunting. There's a great number of stores that range from discount to retail, so watch out that the store is actually discounting what they sell. I've found Le Creuset has some great bargains, and the watch store (Time Factory) discounts their watches quite a bit. Overall a fun afternoon, but rain/snow can detract from this outdoor mall.

My wife and I had a horrible experience at the Bolingbrook Cheddar's, so future diners beware. I had been to several Cheddar's before, so I knew what to expect in their usual fare of burgers, chicken, and salads. However, what I wasn't expecting was bad service, an inattentive server, and my wife getting horribly, horribly ill after dinner. The food itself was good, but judging by my wife's reaction, there's really no reason to return.

It's hard to pass up Entenmann's donuts in the grocery store, but usually their cost limits purchases. However, if you can find your way to the Entenmann's Bakery outlet in Naperville, there's really no reason not to splurge on some powdered sugar-covered bliss. Most items are discounted because they're either past the sell-by date or have been discontinued. If you're looking for a treat without breaking the bank, Entenmann's just might be the ticket!

This huge Goodwill facility is a great addition to the Naperville community. In addition to their well-organized and staffed store, they have a portico where you can drop off your donations without leaving your car. When we've dropped off donations, we've always gotten a sincere thank you and smile from the employee staffing the drop-off station.

Argo is a tea-lovers' version of Starbucks, only a little more low-key and much less caffeinated. My sister is an employee and an absolute fan, and I must agree that Argo brews up some delicious drinks. Although I'm not a huge tea fan, I can always find something that I enjoy, the chocolate mint tea drink just to name one. The only drawback is that this is gourmet tea, so expect to pay just as much for your mate lattes as for caramel machiattos. I suggest the Illy coffee, too-- it's great.

Portillo's Hot Dogs is the suburban answer to the many Chicago grease spots serving up delicious fries, hot dogs, and burgers. While I've had better hot dogs in the city, you can't beat the convenience of Portillo's if you live in the 'burbs like myself. Plus, each Portillo's has awesome theming and a large dining area. This one on Butterfield is themed like the repeal of prohibition, and they do a fine job.

At Penzey's, you'll find everything from your standard salt and pepper to hard-to-find Indian seasonings and blends. They have a wide selection of sized jars to choose from, so you don't have to commit to a $20 jar of spice if you're just experimenting. The employees are also really helpful if you have any questions about which spices to choose.
