Dora is right. You can smell Kingpin from quite a distance. I used to live across the street and I found that nothing would cheer my roommate up like an unexpected bag of King Pin donut holes. They are open late and are conveniently located near campus. I can't say how they compare to other donut shops.

Cha-Am is considered by many to offer the best Thai food in Berkeley. It is certainly yummy, with a large selection of vegetarian and meat based dishes. My first choice is Ruen Pair, but Cha-am is great because you can walk there from campus. Sitting by the window during sunset can be a blinding experience.

The atmospere is lovely at Joshu-Ya. The garden is relaxing and feels tucked away. But the food falls short. I've eaten here many times and never felt that my meal was anything more than passable. I recommend heading down the street to Norikonoko for homestyle Japanese food, or heading to Shattuck for sushi.

My husband and I had our first meal as a married couple here. Dining outside is lovely. Willow Street "Best Wood-Fired Pizza and More" offers yummy California cuisine in a generic setting. I love the great salads, especially the Original Combination Grain Salad without cucumbers and cheese. The service is usually wonderful.

Johnny Rockets is a burger joint with an old fashioned diner decor. They make spectacular milkshakes (hold the whipped cream) and great thick fries, but just average everything else. If you're on the Promenade, it offers fun decor, but there are so many other great choices near by. Bring change for the jukebox.

The wait here is silly, so we often end up at CPK in the mall. That said, Cheesecake has a huge menu and is a fun place to take someone who has never been. The portions are enormous. An appetizer can easily be your whole meal. Prepare for leftovers. Surprisingly (disapointingly) few vegetarian and vegan options. They give you a pager that doesn't work in the mall but we wander around anyway.

Both the restaurant and deli (which are right next to each other) serve up authentic, expensive French cuisine. I love the string beans and the potatoes (and occasionally the red cabbage dish). My husband covets the Etorki cheese and various salamis. The desserts are fabulous. As always, French food is not very vegan friendly.

It's hard not to fill up on the scrumptious foccacia and dipping oil, but save room for fabulous pastas, salads, and minestrone. It isn't on the menu, but you can order one of the fancy dinner slads in a small size to accompany your meal for just a few bucks. Parking is difficult unless you opt for valet.

What is better than hot chocolate on a cold day? Starbucks makes the best vegan hot chocolate, although they do charge extra for soy milk (unfortunately). This location is on the corner of San Tomas and El Camino. Jamba Juice is right next door. It has its own parking lot and you can only exit going south east on El Cam.
