Norikonoko offers outstanding homestyle Japanese cooking in a wonderful, cozy atmosphere. This is a "mom and pop" joint serving wonderful grilled dishes and other specialties. I particularly love the sato shoyu. If you're looking for sushi or the standard Japanese fare you find in the States, you may find yourself disappointed. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Berkeley.

People go to Skates for the wonderful waterfront view; it is worth it. This is a great destination for a romatic evening or a special occasion. The entrees are pricy. It has a vert meat-centric menu, but they are always willing to whip up something vegetarian and I have always found these creations to be tasty.

Spats has a nice, heavy, dark feeling to it that a bar really ought to have. Parking can be a real pain in this part of Shattuck. I'm guessing the food isn't very vegan friendly.

Chez Panisse is a well-loved dining experience in Berkeley. It is very expensive and with good reason -- the food is thoughtfully prepared with delicious ingredients and they can charge what they do and still pack the place. We called ahead and verified that they could make up one vegetarian and one vegan meal, since the menu is fixed. They also have a great little cafe upstairs.

Andronico's has gotten a lot of my paycheck over the years. They offer great produce, a decent deli section, wonderful breads, and a lot of specialty items that you can't find at Safeway. We love the Out of a Flower sorbets and the Wildwood brand soy products. They also bought up my beloved Serious Salsa and made it their own brand.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for Pyramid because it is the first place I had a meal with the man who is now my husband. Pyramid offers standard pub fare and a number of their beers, so of which you can't get on tap anywhere else. The decor is very industrial. I've also been to an event here and it is a good space for one.

My husband loves the variety of toppings including various cheeses, various sauces, avocado, bacon, etc. Many of our friends are madly in love with the Turkish coffee milkshakes. Barney's has a number of locations throughout the Bay Area.

I love Sweet Basil. It has a cozy atmosphere punctuated by great service. The portions are on the small side. Every vegetarian dish I've tried has had a wonderful medley of flavors. My husband was less impressed with his beef dishes. If we're going to Solano, we invariably choose Kathmandu over Sweet Basil.
