I met some of my scooter girlfriends here for brunch one morning and it was EXCELLENT. The staff was polite and funny, and I was wild about the tacky BBQ decor. I hail from the Deep South and I was thrilled beyond reason to find they had shrimp-n-grits (a Charleston favorite) on the menu! Of course I ordered it. I ate the whole huge bowl and it was delicious. They also have REAL sweet tea (serve yourself) - none of that bottled corn syrup crap - and big huge cornbread muffins, plus biscuits. The prices are reasonable (shrimp-n-grits just $9.95) and the long, picnic-table seating is roomy. Now Ya'll go on, git to Memphis Minnies!

My husband and I recently dined here for my birthday. We enjoyed tall, draft beers at the crowded bar and waited about 20 minutes for a table. Our waitress was efficient, fast and polite. We shared the pickled herring appetizer - delicious and plentiful. I had potato pancakes as my entree (three with applesauce), and found them to be a bit over deep-fried. Nothing a side of sour cream couldn't enhance, but Suppenkuche prepares them differently from most places I have been: shredded and pan-sauteed. Here they are more like little nests of potato, deep-fried to a crisp. Good, but not what I expected. I enjoyed a side of traditional German spatzle noodles: fluffy, sliced dough, boiled then sauteed. Excellent. My husband's braised beef entree (a good-sized portion) featured a side of cranberries plus spatzle noodles and red cabbage. I was disappointed that they do not offer more variety of wursts, like other German restaurants I have been to in the past. I also wish they had more traditional desserts, like Sacre torte or Schaum torte, though they were featuring an Apfel Strudel special. Overall, Suppenkuche has very good food. The noise level rose as we continued our meal. The decor is simple and they seat family style, which might not be good for an intimate date. We lucked out, getting seated next to a polite, happy table of three. There were a few kid tables, but the host (who was professional and nice - even asked about our meal midway through) seemed conscious of how he grouped waiting parties. The place filled up as we were leaving about 9 pm, and there was a long wait outside. Total for the 2 of us:
4 large beers, herring appetizer, 1 beef entree, 1 side pancakes, 1 side spatzle = $62. before tips.

I visited Bistro Clovis on Bastille day with three girlfriends. After a sketchy cab ride, we were 20 minutes late for our reservation, yet the hostess was forgiving and greeted us warmly. The cozy, tile-and-glass dining room was buzzing softly with early-evening diners (8 pm). We were seated immediately and offered a complimentary Bastille Day glass of champagne (yes, please!). We shared several appetizers ($8.50 - $10): Salmon Mousse, Escargot, and Scallops, as well as a beef main course ($20). The food was hearty but not too rich, and very flavorful. The portion size was perfect. A basket of warm, chewy baguette helped us soak up the luscious sauces and fresh sauteed garlic. One of us enjoyed Chimay in a proper glass ($7.50) while the rest sipped generously-poured glasses of wine ($6.50 - $7.25). We did not have dessert, but we heard they make a wonderful apple tart tartin here. We all agreed this would be a wonderful place for a semi-casual, romantic dinner for two. Merveilleux!

I have heard horror stories about modeling for haircut classes, but the color class I modeled for on a Sunday afternoon was sublime. The salon is beautiful - very modern and spacious. The stylists were friendly, professional and eager to learn. The instructors were firm but helpful in making technique suggestions. This was a blonde highlighting class and they took me from icky green-brown ash to a gorgeous sunlit beachy blonde. WOW. Even though the class took about 4.5 hours, it was worth it. I hope everyone who volunteers to be a model to at di Pietro Todd has the same great experience that I did. Thanks!

I dined at Buca di Beppo with a group of about 20 people. One end of the table ordered lightly, the other end ordered like crazy. Dish after dish after dish of pasta, meat sauce, cheese, etc. arrived and it was way too much food. Our end enjoyed antipasta salad and calamari. The few pasta dishes we ordered were decent, but nothing exceptional. A bit too much sauce and lacking in spice/flavor. Perhaps if we had all been at a nice ROUND table, the odd ordering would not have happened. Long rectangle tables aren't even good for board meetings. We were very cramped. The restaurant was so loud I couldn't hear the person sitting next to me. The music was loud, so all of the diners shouted at each other. The Italian-Pope-Catholic decor was fun but corny. I am glad I experienced this "landmark" SF eatery, but I won't be rushing back any time soon.

I shopped here for years when I lived in Atlanta. The guys who work here really know their stuff, and if they don't have what you are looking for, they will do their best to find it for you some place and get it to you. Old punk records, new wave cassettes (yes, cassettes as in tapes!), local Atlanta CD's, and decor to die for. The next time you visit, look up at all the cool posters on the ceiling and memorabilia on the walls. Oh and don't be shy about chatting up the staff about music. Contrary to popular belief, they won't bite.

This hotel's greatest feature is its location - a short walk to the Decatur Square and Marta. Our room was clean but dull, with terrible bathroom lighting - we moved a lamp in for more light! The in-room coffee pot, microwave and refrigerator are nice to have, however, we requested regular coffee twice and never received it. We finally left a tip and housekeeping left a pack. The front desk staff is polite, but not very warm and welcoming. We felt like customers as opposed to guests. The pool area is nice but dimly lit, kind of boring – maybe they could add some plants? The fitness center is also dull but all the equipment worked and it was clean. HBO and cable TV? Um, no. We got about 8 stations total, 3 were sports, 2 were news. We opted for a movie - $12 for a PPV one night. The hotel was direct about billing, however, state and city tax added $64 to a $400 bill. Ouch. I can't say I loved it here, but it was fine. This hotel seems more suited for college students' parents or business travelers.

I lived in Atlanta for 12 years before moving to the West Coast. On a recent return visit, Oz was the first place I went, straight off the plane! I have eaten at Mellow Mushroom, Savage Pizza, Fellini's Pizza and Johnny's Pizza - all really good local (not franchised!) pizza places with eclectic cooks and counter servers, and funky unique decor. Oz Pizza is by far my favorite. I love their fresh, chewy crust, the spicy rich sauce and offering of toppings. My favorite is the vegetarian pie. If you want great pizza in Atlanta, Oz is the place to go!

When I lived in Bmore these were two of my favorite places to go on a date.
Simons - Little tables mean you get to be close to your co-diner. Sometimes the music gets loud, esp. after the bar crowd arrives. Great menu, everything is fresh and yummy. They used to have Magic Hat #9 (Apricot Wheat brew) on draft... a romance elixir! You'll want to make a reservation b/c the place is tiny and fills up fast.
Gecko's - 2318 Fleet St, phone (410) 732-1961
Get a table upstairs away from the bar area b/c it gets smoky and loud. GREAT food, again yummy and fresh, with wonderful variations of margaritas. The staff is super friendly and give good service, even when the place gets busy.
Both are moderately priced. and located near Patterson Park. Have fun!
