We bought a large 3 bedroom 2 bath condo here in the 1980s right after it was built. So I spent many years here until I graduated from high school. I don't know what it looks like now, but as a teenager, I LOVED it. I babysat for everyone in the building, so I earned extra money that way. It had a small but nice pool right by the water (I still have the scar on my chin from diving in), a running/walking track above the garage, 2 racquetball courts, a weight room, 2 locker rooms, a HUGE party/common area, tennis court, you name it. We always had a great view of the water and the fireworks. Right next to Ferdinand Marcos' property, which I heard is now developed LOL. I just loved how close it was to everything, right across the street from Spohn and about 1 mile away from school, and right next to Cole Park, Oleander Point for the windsurfers, and that beach. And the neighbors were great!

I went to St. James back in the 1980s from 6th to 8th grade before heading off to IWA and Ray. We went to church here too. I had a rough time here, since I was not from Texas and I wasn't used to the lifestyles of the rich and famous. However, I got a fantastic education here, and I still think back to reading Great Expectations in Mrs. Parr's English class in 7th grade, when almost everyone I've talked to since then wouldn't even tackle it till high school. We went on great trips, to New Orleans, all over the Hill Country, etc. My brother's 9th grade class went to Washington DC. His was the first 9th grade at St. James, and I don't know if they still have it or not (being up here in Seattle and all). Anyway, it taught me some good life lessons and even though I hated it at the time (I wasn't a popular rich kid, and it was junior high - nuff said), I'm glad I went.

We went yesterday for the first time, my youngest two and I. I had a harder time finding it because I was expecting it to be an actual museum building, not a storefront in the middle of the street across from the Woolworth's.
When we walked in, I thought, "This is it? Well, I guess it's only $10 and we don't have to join." The girl at the front counter was sweet. We went in. I thought for sure that we'd be there a max of maybe 1/2 hour, since I thought my 5 year old boy would be bored. There were only two other kids there. It was super quiet, so I thought, well this isn't good because that means no one comes here.
I asked the front counter girl and the other two mothers about this place, and they told me that since the weather was so nice that no one was coming, and that most of the people had already come and gone that day for an earlier class. AH HA!
1 and 1/2 hours goes by without me noticing and most especially, without my preschooler noticing. I looked down at my watch, and I was shocked by how long we'd been there. So I joined ($70 got me two households and 3 kids for a whole year, including reciprocity at 17 other kids' museums, 8 free guest passes, 3 free classes, newsletter, etc).
I was then told about all of the other wonderful offerings (Spanish classes, a toddler/preschool class a few times per week, TONS of activities for kids, etc), and I was just simply amazed.
After having had a Seattle Children's Museum membership and letting it lapse because we all found the museum way too boring after a few visits (and too hard to get to and park), I'm so glad that we've found the Tacoma Children's Museum. I agree with the other reviewer who said that this is better than Seattle - MUCH better, by leaps and bounds.

Good location, right on the corner of 27th and Bridgeport. It is a nice, clean, new store, friendly employees, TONS of stuff. I really love their after-holiday sales, when all the holiday stuff is 75% off or more. They really know how to blow out clearance stuff here! I've stocked up on costumes, toys, decorations, etc for next Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc. They have a good cosmetics selection too, and plenty of variety when it comes to medicines for aches, pains, colds and coughs. I've never used the pharmacy here, so I can't speak to that. We use the Bartell's across the street for that. I think the drugstore merchandise is really good here, and the sales are nice.

Nice, friendly place, decent food, fun karaoke. It's a little small for what it wants to be. I like the remodel and it's not so divey. The staff is really nice. This is a locals only or regulars only type of place, and I think they are trying to appeal to a younger audience. They need more parking. It's convenient and easy to get to. They have steak nights every Wednesday. They have lots of pull tab machines too.

This is a good VV since it's larger than most others. It's conveniently located, right on Hosmer and I-5. It's the big one that you can see from the freeway.

I like the selection here, since there's LOTS of stuff. I think they get the military donations from soldiers who are moving a lot. For more quality merchandise, I prefer the VV over on 19th near Tacoma Community College.

Glad that there's a good Catholic shop here in Tacoma. This was a little hard for me to find, since it's set back from the street quite a ways. It's back near the Tacoma Goodwill and the Outback, same shopping center.
This is a VERY Orthodox/ultra-conservative Catholic store, so be prepared. I'm a liberal social justice gal, so I just kinda ignored that part. I was there to look for baptism gowns and invitations for my baby. They have a great prayer card selection, and saints medallions, rosaries, etc. I was happy to see the huge selection. And lots of books.

We've been here a few times for some scrapes that required stitches after hours. Nice little clinic, professional front office staff, not long to wait, not too much paperwork. The health care providers were all very nice, and they helped my children settle down. They made it pretty easy for them to get stitches.
They were also respectful of privacy and the HIPAA laws, as my boyfriend came right away to help the kids out and the front staff made him wait for me to come get him since he was not their father. I thought that was pretty cool, that they wouldn't just send someone back, even though I told them that he was coming. If you're concerned about privacy, so are they, which I appreciate. Good care. I would go back again.

Torn down a few years ago from what I heard. It's the big emtpy lot right in front of the Albertson's and the Dollar Tree. I see the for lease sign and saw some people surveying it, so hopefully they'll turn it into something else. So as of now, it's no longer here. Don't know why it's showing up on the Judy's Book search.

My kids are, unfortunately, no strangers to ERs and hospital stays. They have breathing issues (Reactive Airway Distress) with colds and bronchitis. So when my youngest son had another flare up in 2005 (it happens once per year, like clockwork, right after Thanksgiving and before Christmas), I took him to the Mary Bridge ER in the middle of the night.
We had to wait a while with his breathing being pretty harsh, which we never had to wait that long up at Children's Hospital in Seattle or Valley Medical Center in Renton. So I thought that was pretty stressful, but it all worked out fine.
They admitted him upstairs, where they were quite full with RSV patients. The staff was terrific to my son and my family, so I really appreciated the homey feel versus the over-medicalized feel at others (like Valley). They sent specialists in and worked with us, gave us treatments that were never recommended to us before, and set us up with appointments with really awesome local specialists (ENT and Pulmonology).
I SO appreciated the extra mile they went to for us to get us on track and the very detailed instructions as to what to do. They even called the American Lung Association to have them do a free environmental assessment for my home! Even a hearing and speech test for my little guy was set up for us. Children's, Valley and Swedish combined didn't give us these steps to take to help my son, after all the years and visits there.
I am SOOOOO thankful for Mary Bridge!!! They really cared about his welfare, his future, his education (speech and hearing can have a profound effect if not caught early), and most of all, our status as a divorced family who lives a distance apart from each other, etc. My son is so much healthier now because they referred us to the right people and gave us the consistent, right help for his particular malady. Only wish I had known it sooner, and as a parent, I wish someone would have told me these things to do way before this. GREAT CARE! Oh, and they are really close, easy to get to and free parking!
