Cafecito is a charming bar and restaurant in what looks like a renovated laundromat if you look closely enough behind the decor. The ambience, surprisingly, isn't harmed too badly by it.
The cocktails are dirt cheap ($6-$7) and the menu items varied and interesting (Mango ketchup with yukka fries).
Service was exceptional, and the clientele was mostly out-of-neighborhood girls gossiping.

Everything from the atmosphere to the menu is exquisite at this 'creative Roman' restaurant across the road from the 2nd ave cinemas in the East Village.
They have combined my two favorite ingredients, porchini mushroom and truffle, with a freshly made fettuchini with quail and blueberries for a distinctively pleasing ending to each mouthful. What a dish!
The service, while abrupt, is authentically Italian - from the Vespa delivery bike out the front to the Eurotrash soccer wannabe waiters and charming old school chefs.

There is not a lot of good things to say about this over-priced Tuscan restaurant in Nolita. It has a very nice kitchen. Just the stuff coming out of it is ordinary. Very ordinary and very expensive.

OK probably not. But the Sunburnt Cow combines what you like in a local on Monday and Tuesday nights and then draws a good crowd on Thursday and Friday who get trashed and dance to brazilian house music.
All food on Monday is $5, with interesting, if slightly small, dishes to choose from. If you can beat the cook at EA Fight Night on the Playstation you eat for free. Drink enough Moo Juices (fruity shots served in baby bottles) and you probably think you have a chance to.

The food is simply amazing. Passionate, interesting and unique dishes, such as a wild boar pate with camembert, define this little hole in the wall restaurant in West Soho. The husband and wife team take care of everything in this 6 or 7 table restaurant, making you feel you gate crashed that friend you never had who was so utterly passionate about food and its ingredients. The small menu is a mix of french and caribean cuisine. Also, the BYO policy means you wont end up spending a fortune.

The Tuck Shop is a small purveyor of great Australian foods. The meat pies are authentically brilliant, reminding me of small Australian bakeries on the North coast. The place also serves Vanilla Slices, Sticky Date Pudding and Lamingtons. Just opened in the East Village (I went there today, 9th August, and they were still setting up).
