If you enjoy drippingly good southern cooking with down home ambiance and a stable of regulars, visit the Florida Avenue Grill. The smothered chicken is delectable, the greens scrumptious and everything is absolutely perfect. The only problem is you can't pop into this restaurant after a night at the movies -- the hours are limited. Check the door. The place also is worth a visit because it holds a special place in Washington's history as an African-American mecca. If your lucky, the owner -- who, I believe, is in his 90s -- will be there and will tell you some stories about the place. The decor and atmosphere is basic and down home, which fits. You might find yourself striking up a conversation with someone from the neighborhood (which, unfortunately, has become extremely gentrified) or someone who's traveled form the suburbs just to eat here. Be hungry when you visit.
