Well, it's not literally an historical landmark but Rae's has been around forever and it's like stepping back in time when you walk through the doors. Unlike places like Mel's, which is a modern take on the old 50s diners, Rae's is the real deal. The food is good, hearty American fare and the prices are cheap -- especially the breakfast menu. Don't go expecting haute cuisine, obviously, but the ambiance alone is worth the visit.

La Cabana serves authentic, traditional Mexican fare in a fun, boisterous atmosphere. Most everything on the menu is good -- in particular the carne asada. A lot of people come here for the drinks (especially good are the margaritas) so the bar is packed in the evenings. There's an outdoor patio in the back which is particularly nice late spring, early summer. Service is prompt and the servers are friendly.

If so, you'll love Gilbert's. It's one of those unassuming little places that you hear about via word of mouth and the margaritas in particular are highly touted. The place gets pretty busy on weekend evenings, when the compact, dimly lit dining area comes alive. The entrees with meat are all excellent, but vegetarians have only one option (a burrito) which is tasty but mostly beans and lettuce.

Although the restaurant is known for its tacos (hence the name) the burritos are also outstanding. Laid back, comfortable, cozy atmosphere.

It's not surprising that a Mercedes dealership in Beverly Hills is overly crowded, so expect to wait for just about everything service-related: getting an appointment, dropping off the vehicle (the line of cars often spills into the street), picking up a loaner car -- all this before the car is even repaired. Sometimes the repair take several days and, if it's exceptionally busy, details fall through like having your car washed upon pick up. If the car happens to belong to someone "important," and you can drop that person's name, your service might be quicker. Irritating but again -- consider the location.

As you enter this store, be prepared for the onslaught of pine armoires, dressers and tables (among other things). The furniture is sturdy and reasonably priced, and there's a wide selection of stains and finishes from which to choose. The store can apply the stain for you, or you can purchase the materials yourself. Examples of the store's work adorn the sidewalk, and the bright, bold colors light up this stretch of Lincoln Blvd. Definitely worth a look if you're furnishing your home.

If you're looking for furniture, Painted Ladies will probably catch your eye since they display a number of items (tables, chairs, end tables) on the sidewalk. The items are pretty, distressed/painted pieces similar in style to Shabby Chic, but the quality isn't nearly as good. Prices are on the expensive side, but negotiable. Novices -- proceed with caution! Make sure that your final purchase price is proportionate to the quality of the item.

Buying at Ikea is fun because they stock almost everything related to furniture and housewares, and it's all modern, stylish, colorful and reasonably priced. One drawback is that the quality isn't always good, but if you're looking for short-term furniture and you're on a budget, you'll love it here. The biggest disadvantage when shopping at Ikea is customer service, especially via phone. Calls to the store are routed to a call center (it's hard to reach the store directly) and it's extremely difficult to speak to an actual human who's knowledgable. Phone reps frequently give out misinformation so if something doesn't sound correct, it probably isn't. In general, it's wise to avoid calling Ikea for customer service, if at all possible -- but if you must, patience and diligence are mandatory.
