Same ownership as The Room -- a nightclub on Santa Monica Blvd. & 14th St. -- Barcopa is a small, dark club with very limited seating (by the dance floor). There's plenty of room at the bar, though, which is nice and long. Drinks are on the expensive side, but at least they're not watered down. Dancing to hip hop music is the norm here. Line picks up at 11pm.

California Chicken Cafe serves healthy wraps, salads and side dishes at reasonable prices. Personal favorites are the vegetarian rice wrap with butternut squash as a side. The only downside is the wraps are messy and usually fall apart when you're almost finished eating them. Dining area is clean and casual -- you place the order and seat yourself, then a server brings the food to you. The place does booming business during both lunch and dinner, but the waits generally aren't too long. Take out or eat in. There's also a location on Westwood Blvd, just south of Olympic.

Irish pub with local bands performing in the back. There's no dance floor, so the emphasis is on the drinks (which are reasonably priced). Located on trendy Main Street, the place is a favorite among locals, and there's generally no line to get in. Overall, the place has a relaxed vibe and it's a refreshing break from the overcrowded club scene.

Zanzibar is owned by the same folks as Temple Bar (also in Santa Monica) so the design and music styling is similar. There's a live DJ spinning hip hop on Saturdays, and house on Fridays. The Moroccan decor is trendy, but not annoyingly so, and there's a large dance floor. The line picks up at about 11pm and the place does get crowded. The dress code isn't restrictive and both casual or dressed up will work. $10 cover.

It's fairly easy to spot Diddy Riese in Westwood: look for the line outside the door -- particularly after dinner. The place is famous for its freshly-baked cookies (3 for $1, hard to beat that) but they also carry brownies and ice cream. Everything is reasonably priced. Since it's in the heart of Westwood Village, there are a ton of nearby businesses to visit. On the downside, however, it's tough to find parking.

The concept of this bar is interesting (the bar is literally, as the name suggests, a circle) but there's little more beyond that gimmick. The place is dark and dirty, and is close to being a dive bar -- yet it's fairly popular with locals as well as visitors. The line to get in picks up at around 11pm. Live DJ spins hip hop and some rock, all in a mix. Random tidbit: last time I went here was with some male friends who noted that there are no bathroom mirrors in the men's room.

This compact little store manages to fit a lot of high end product into such a small space. There's a deli with gourmet sandwiches and a host of other hot foods; a bakery; Godiva chocolates; freshly prepared sushi (also excellent); and a suprisingly large selection of fine wine. And, of course, there are groceries. Because of the small space, the store's selection is limited but if you're not attached to a specific brand name you should be able to get what you need. Prices in general are higher than, say, Ralph's and sales are infrequent.

Wally's is a high-end wine shop with a knowledgable staff and an excellent selection of both rare and 'every day' items. Connoisseurs in particular will appreciate the store's ability to locate hard-to-find vintages. The store assembles and delivers great gourmet baskets, too. Ideal for corporate gifts.

If you're looking for a couch and have outgrown Ikea (but aren't quite ready for Levitz or Wickes), check out Stansbury Collection on artsy Abbot Kinney. The store isn't huge but carries a dozen or so different styles of sofas, and even more fabric options -- all good quality. Most of their couches can be made into sofa beds -- inexpensively, too. End tables, armoires, and artwork round out the selection of this stylish boutique.
