RFD is one of the best organic vegan restaurants in Los Angeles. Even non-vegans will find something on the diverse men. It isn't all hardcore tempeh, sea vegetables and brown rice, which by the way are all excellent. The desserts are also terrific, and the giant cookies (chocolate chip and carob mint) are amazing. The biggest drawback is parking, as 5th & Santa Monica is a busy intersection that rarely has available meters. The restaurant also uses a delivery service, which isn't particularly fast or cheap.

Wilshire West has a large selection of writing papers that are available for purchase either in bulk or by the sheet. Most of the designs are bright and modern, and geared more to a younger, artistic crowd. The focus here is on paper, so picture frames and other tchotzkes are minimal. Great place to browse if you're looking to design invitations. Service tends to be a little on the icy side, but don't let that stop you from having a look.

Located in the heart of the 3rd St Promenade area, Ocean Ave serves excellent seafood in a casual, upscale (but not stuffy) atmosphere. Actually, the restaurant has a breezy feel, thanks largely to its location across the street from the Pacific. The food is fresh (they print new menus every day) and the servers are friendly. Menu highlights include the Chilean Seabass, cioppino and lobster taquito appetizers. The biggest drawback is parking (valet costs $5 even with validation), but there are nearby garages if you don't mind walking a few blocks. Some garages charge after 6pm, though.

One of the first things you see upon entering the restaurant is a woman making tortillas -- which are among the best in town. Tia Juana serves authentic Mexican food and has excellent enchiladas burritos. Vegetarians have only one option, though (basically a lettuce & bean burrito) and a majority of the entrees contain beef. The place gets pretty busy during lunch and dinner but the service is fast and friendly.

Don't let the name fool you, there's more than just burgers at the Hamlet. Sandwiches, salads, fajitas and soups round out the menu, so there's something for everyone here (including vegetarians). Highly recommended is the lobster bisque. This particular location is a little more upscale than the restaurant on Sepulveda & National. Average entree price is around $9-10. Large dining area, full bar and a casual, festive atmosphere.

Callahan's is a greasy spoon with no ambiance and spotty service. Can't really give an assessment of the food itself because I never got a chance to order. After being seated and given some coffee (which was below average), I proceeded to wait. And wait, despite our waitress' promise that she'd be right back. When the couple that walked in after us placed their order and received their food, I called it quits. The cashier who took my money for the coffee was strikingly unperturbed that a customer was leaving because of dismal service.

Brenda Himmel is a high-end stationer located on trendy Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. The store carries an excellent selection of elegant writing papers, cards, picture frames and gift items. Prices are a little on the high side, but the product is top-notch -- as is the service. If you're searching for Christmas or holiday cards with an old world charm, this is a good place to look, as the shop carries a line (Royle) that most other stationers do not.

One of the few bars in Westwood, Maloney's not surprisingly has a college feel to it and an upbeat, youthful atmosphere. Mainly a Bruin bar, the place is filled to capacity on weekends, but the place does have its charm during weekday lunch hours. Local business people frequently go here for their midday meal. Great place to watch sports (mainly Los Angeles based teams or, better yet, UCLA). Nice vibe overall.

217 is located in a desirable area -- on Broadway a block west of 3rd St. Promenade. It’s a small but stylish bar/club and one of the nicest ones along the Promenade. The venue has a strict dress code enforced by an out-of-work Italian actor that’s been there for a decade. Collared shirts & dress shoes are a must. Hip hop music dominates, there’s some seating along the wall and a small dance floor with a small stage. Worth checking out, but watch the attire!

Same ownership as Barcopa (the nightclub located on Main St. in Venice), The Room is an inconspicuous, stylish club that's dimly lit with a cool, laid back vibe.
The Room is slightly larger club then its sister-club, but still small in relation to other clubs. There’s seating
in a few corner areas and tables that encompass one half the dance floor. Hip hop is the main type of music.
Line is not usually an issue and there’s a very small cover, if any, on the weekend.
