Located on the second floor of a strip mall is this gem of a sushi restaurant. Great place for lunch as well as dinner. The food is fresh, portions are generous, prices reasonable. And the service is remarkably quick. The restaurant is divided into two sections: a sitdown dining area and a sushi bar. Together, they make for a pleasant atmosphere that can be described as upscale casual.

If Montana Clock can't fix it -- no one can. That's the general buzz amongst Brentwood/Santa Monica timepiece aficionados. As such, this little shop stays extremely busy and there's frequently a line to drop off or pick up merchandise. Sometimes the repairs take awhile, depending on the nature of the work; sometimes the work can be done same day. Parking is a bit of a hassle, especially during lunchtime, but the friendly, personalized service makes up for it once you get in the door.

Drexler Collection is an outstanding place to go to if you're in the market for note cards, invitations, writing blocs, placecards, and so on. They also carry a wide selection of envelopes, and are a more artistic alternative to Kelly Paper. The store is a bit cluttered and has the quirky feel of a used bookstore, so be prepared to ask for assistance in finding things. Or, better yet, call first.

Brentwood Stationers is an unassuming little store located on the main drag of San Vicente in the heart of Brentwood. They stock all of the basics -- post-its, fountain pens, legal pads, etc -- but in relatively small quantities so the prices are higher than those of the average office superstore. Custom stationery and greeting cards can be ordered, and the selection of styles is more conservative than artistic. In general, the store's merchandise isn't wildly unique, but it gets the job done.

The legendary Roxy Theatre is still a good place to catch live music, although the venue's heyday is most likely behind them. Still, the smallish size of the bar/club makes it an ideal place for concert-goers who eschew corporate rock in thousand-seat arenas. The club is wide but not particularly deep, so even those standing in the back row aren't far from the stage. There are a handful of tables in the very back, for those who prefer to remain seated. The only drawback is the venue's contentious security staff, who seem more intent on harassing paying customers than "protecting" them.

Great place for live music, particularly for those who don't like large venues where the band looks like raisins on a stage that's a mile away. Instead, the Knitting Factory is a smallish club with several different rooms: a central bar area; a main stage (capacity of a few hundred); and the Alterknit lounge, a no-frills room that holds maybe 100. The club books a variety of acts -- some up & coming, some that have been around forever but are slightly left of center. Sometimes there are seats for shows, sometimes not, but because of the intimate size of the venues there's never a bad view of the stage. Drinks are on the expensive side, but on par with other clubs in the area. The club is located on Hollywood & LaBrea and has its own parking garage. $5 to park and the elevator leads straight to the club's front door, which is convenient.

Activities abound here at Universal Citywalk, but it's crowded and expensive so bring your wallet and some patience. For starters, the parking garage is practically a city unto itself, mainly because it houses cars for a concert venue and Universal Studios, along with the shopping plaza. Once you negotiate the garage and make it into Citywalk, however, there's much to see and do. The open air plaza has a number of retail stores and restaurants, and there's an electricity to the air, thanks to the always abundant crowds. Great place to people-watch.

Sandbags serves excellent sandwiches, wraps and salads. The food is made fresh and makes for an excellent lunch, but the portions are small -- especially the sandwiches -- so those with large appetites, be forewarned. Staff is friendly and the dining area is comfortable and clean. Parking, as usual, is a nightmare in Westwood Village.

Sensory overload begins the second you step into this Aahs store, located in Westwood Village. The walls and shelves are filled with gift wrap, toys, trinkets, t-shirts, candles, stuffed animals, picture frames, humorous greeting cards and cartoon merchandise (Family Guy and Simpsons, in particular). At the register is a large selection of candy, much of it retro (Pop Rocks, anyone?) -- but the prices are expensive. The store also doesn't have the best return policy so read the fine print before purchasing. Parking is a nightmare, so if you want to get in and get out, try the store in Santa Monica. It's not quite as large, but has a similar selection -- and an adjacent parking lot.

Bay Cities is a deli, bakery and specialty grocery shop combined. The sandwiches are excellent (and huge) but the counter gets busy during lunch hours, so pay attention when your number is called. While waiting, you can peruse the rest of the market which stocks a wide range of gourmet snacks and cheeses that you won't find elsewhere. Parking can be a problem, even though there's a small lot adjacent to the store. The place also closes on Mondays.
