Lares is an unremarkable Mexican restaurant tucked away on Pico and 30th in Santa Monica. The dining area is dark and cozy, and the ambiance is romantic during dinnertime. The food is not bad, but not great, and there aren't many options for vegetarians. Service is generally pretty good, although they once made an error with my order and refused to admit it -- until I mentioned that a food allergy was involved. Suddenly they were more receptive to re-doing that order.

The good news: Annie's has extremely reasonable prices for women's haircuts. The bad news: sometimes you get what you pay for. If you're in a rush and need a walk-in appointment, this salon can probably accomodate you. If you're lucky, you'll get out with a decent cut. Be forewarned, however, that some of the stylists don't follow instructions. At all.

The El Rey is a great place to catch live music, particularly for those who prefer the smaller club settings. The venue has an art deco feel to it, with its deep red hues, plush couches and vintage chandeliers. The venue itself holds several hundred; most stand on the floor but there are seats along the perimeter and upstairs. The club books a wide variety of acts, from hip hop to alt rock, so the crowd changes accordingly. Parking is a nightmare, but there is valet service -- a little expensive but worth it.

As thrift stores go, Clare Foundation's is one of the more organized -- and the merchandise is of better quality than most. It's apparent that the screening process is a little more selective here. Furniture is in good condition and not too dated. Same with the clothing and electronics. And there's also a decent selection of record albums. Best of all, proceeds from sales go to the Clare Foundation, which specializes in addiction recovery for men and women.

But, as the saying goes, if you have to look at the price tags, you can't afford it. Customers can't just walk in off the street -- they have to be buzzed in -- but service is highly personalized once you're in the door.

Noodle Planet is a fun, happy, boisterous place to get reasonably priced Asian noodle (and rice) dishes. Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese items are all on the menu. Personal favorites include the spicy spaghetti and any of the Pho dishes. The portions here are huge, but save some room for dessert because next door is -- Boba World! Every kind of bubble tea imaginable. The only drawback is parking; hope that the garages aren't full because meters are almost impossible to get.

Chinese restaurants are plentiful, but it's hard to find one that's outstanding. New Flavors is good, but not great. The food is good and the prices are average ($8 and up for a dinner entree), but they cut corners here and there. There's an extra charge for white rice, for example, and soy sauce and utensils aren't provided unless specifically requested by the customer. Delivery speed varies but more often than not the wait is 45-60 minutes. All in all, not a bad place for takeout -- but neither is it superior.

Takao is a low-key but outstanding sushi restaurant with a clean, simple decor and an unpretentious vibe all 'round. The wait staff are extremely friendly and the food is superb (if expensive). The tuna sashimi is excellent, as is the carpaccio. The dining area is on the small side, so there may be a wait for a table. Also note that the restaurant closes after lunch and doesn't re-open for dinner until about 5:30pm.
