For movie buffs whose tastes run a little left of center, Vidiots is a must-see. The store specializes in indie films and imports, but carries mainstream titles as well. And if you're looking to special order an obscure film, start here. The clerks will probably know what you're talking about -- or they'll do their best to track it down.

Aaron Brothers stocks a wide array of classic frames, many in simple black or silver. There's also a wide selection of specialty frames for wedding and baby photos. If you can wait, keep an eye out for sales: at certain times of the year, they run a buy-one-get-one-for-a penny promotion. Other times they have 40% off coupons in the newspaper. Custom framing is a little on the expensive side and if you have a deadline to meet, make sure to ask in advance for the turnaround time.

In the back of this trendy Silverlake restaurant is a lounge that regularly hosts The Fold -- live, alternative music. The plush couches, exotic decor and dim lighting make for a pleasant, mellow atmosphere. There's a full bar and food is available before & during performances. Drinks are a little pricey but it's a top venue all 'round.

A throwback to the days before hardware stores became megamarts, B&B doesn't appear to have changed with the times. The store is divided into two separate wings, the narrow aisles crammed with everything from drill bits to cleaning supplies. It's not diffiicult to flag down a salesperson for help here, and occasionally you'll even find something cheaper than at Home Depot.

This little hole-in-the-wall bar & music venue isn't in the prettiest neighborhood but it's a fantastic place to catch up & coming alternative bands on weekday nights (on weekends it's a gay bar) . The place is small & dark, and the musicians play under a brightly-lit sign that reads 'Salvation.' Great atmosphere.

Cafe 50's is a kistchy little niche diner that serves up standard American fare: sandwiches, burgers, omelettes. And the milkshakes are the best. The walls are adorned with vintage 50s posters and memorabilia, and mini-jukeboxes can be found in every booth. Best of all, there's a special each day of the week (e.g., Thirsty Thursdays, where shakes are discounted).

There are more cons than pros at this particular Bally's, unfortunately. It's overcrowded and parking is extremely inconvenient (the lot costs 50 cents and fills quickly, and the neighborhood spaces are scarce). The staff aren't rude but neither are they helpful. On the plus side, there is an indoor running track and an Olympic sized pool.

Reasonably priced, great place for breakfast, immensely popular on the weekend. The line moves quickly, though, and there's free coffee while you wait. After you're seated, the wait staff greets you with fresh squeezed orange juice (not free, but delicious anyway). The omelets, of course, are fantastic and so are the waffles. Pleasant, casual atmosphere and the walls are adorned with giant, historical photos of the Santa Monica area. The only drawbacks are parking, which is scarce, and no air conditioning, which can make the place stuffy during the late summer months.

There's no gimmick to this diner, just good food at reasonable prices. It's a popular restaurant among the locals and the place does particularly brisk business on weekends during brunch times. You can often bypass the long lines to sit at the counter, however. Great place to go for a late breakfast (average omelette price: $8). Sandwiches are also excellent.

Oil changes are satisfactory at this Jiffy Lube as far as pricing goes, but the service isn't always quick. If there are more than 3 or 4 people ahead of you, the wait can be 45 minutes to an hour. If they also perform minor maintenance (changing windshield wipers, for example), check the work before you leave. Mistakes are made frequently.
