The hotel looks grand and historic from Old Town. Aside from the unique setting and the perfect location, the rooms were definitely three-star quality (very plain). No ceiling fan in our room (as was pictured), but the AC worked fine when needed. Water pressure in the shower was iffy. We called the front desk on a couple occasions (one for extra towels and another for an extra pillow) and they were delivered to the room within minutes. The freeway is a few blocks from the hotel but the hotel is high enough up that we could hear the freeway noise in our room. Didn't keep us up at night and it became unnoticable background noise after a little bit, but it was there.
Old Town was the original downtown San Diego back when the Spanish ran things. Old Town is full of many very popular Mexican restaurants. If you don't make dinner reservations in advance, you will have a 1-2 hour wait wherever you go...except at Acapulco restaurant, which is part of this hotel. But Acapulco is a large chain that doesn't do much in the way of authenticity.
The hotel is a block away from the Old Town Trolley which, despite its name, is really a trolley that takes you on a tour of the city. You can get on and off at any stop (trolleys every half-hour), and it is a great way to visit some sites.

This is the best salon I've been to. Actually, it's not just a salon it's a full service salon. Offering a receptionist, manicures and pedicures, facials, makeup done, botox injections and massages. This place offers all under one roof.
The location is quite large and offers approximately 25 different stylists. Parking can be difficult at lunch time because Baker's Square is right next door, but other than that parking is no problem.

This hotel is located in the heart of Mission Valley right next to (and walking distance) the wonderful Fashion Valley Mall.
The hotel has been in place many years and has had many remodels. The covention area is still quite dated but that doesn't stop this hotel from hosting many fine conventions and it's yearly jazz festival. During one of the many conventions, you can usually have dinner poolside and be warm in the San Diego evenings.
Located just off the 8 freeway, it can be a bit noisy and congested but it's still a nice, convenient place to stay. The airport is within 10 minutes from the hotel and the San Diego trolley is within walking distance. Riding the trolley gives you access to many different areas you wouldn't visit normally.

La Pensione isn't part of a large-scale, generic hotel chain. It's a mom-and-pop operation, and a slice of Italy, too. With the feel of a Mediterranean bed-and-breakfast, the quaint hotel offers 75 rooms surrounding a charming courtyard, where guests mingle and sip their morning coffee. If the bay breezes are too much for you, visit their lobby and meet Penny, their friendly dog and unofficial greeter.
Since the hotel is located in the center of Little Italy, the pensione captures the same flavor of the surrounding shops and restaurants. You'll feel like you're in Italy, and--just like in Italy--it's easier to get around on foot or by trolley than by car

Located on Harbor Island just by the airport, it is hard to beat this hotel if you are flying out the next morning. It offers great views of the harbor, marina and downtown. Each room had a pleasant terrace you could sit out on and enjoy the view. Staff was pleasant and parking was available at a cost of $13 per day. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance but you will need a ride to the Gaslamp Quarter.

I've stayed twice, once in the newer part (two story building) and once in the old part (one story in back). The rooms in the newer part, are newer, spacious and clean. Your basic room for a basic rate. I was not satisfied with the old room, run down and small. Ask for a newer room. Good location for San Diego activies. Close to Old Town. In business/freeway area so don't expect to walk around.
