Del Mar racing is history at it's best! If you live in San Diego then attending the races is a must and opening day is tremendous. Opening day is filled with celebrities, high profile individuals and the rich and famous. No matter what the weather is like, opening day is a requirement to dress to the nines and for ladies to show off their favorite hats.
Located off the 5 freeway traffic can be congested during most parts of the day. Traffic can be almost any time during the races.
The races is a great time whether you have tons of money to spend or just a couple. You can have fun regardless if you have an expensive box seat or are just in general seating.
Definitely a fun time!

We stayed at the Seapointe in June and as usual, June gloom weather was upon us, no sun all week. Great location across the street from the beach, ocean views, 3 minutes to Legoland, grocery store, restaurants, shopping.
Full kitchen allowed us to have breakfasts in our unit, and dinner whether we made it or got takeout from the restaurants. We visited Legoland, Seaworld, and Disneyland during our stay, it only took 30 minutes to Seaworld and 45 minutes to Disneyland.
Two pools, one for families and one for adults only. The pool was a little cold for being heated, but it could've been the weather? There are lots of activities including tennis, volleyball, ping pong, and an activities center. Staff was good, you only get housekeeping service once during the week, and it is a bit pricey ($289/night for the 2 bdrm) but I think worth it for the location and full kitchen.

If you don't love golf or have kids, stay away. Kids are everywhere and very loud. The hotel is pleasant enough, but very bland in decor. Service is as expected. Unlike other Four Seasons, though, you've got a lot of surfer type workers literally speaking to you from a script. It feels a little forced/redundant/corporate. True luxury experiences I have enjoyed are more spontaneous than this.
They did upgrade us without asking at check-in. Help with bags at check out takes forever. The bed is hard and the least luxurious I have experienced at a 5 star despite the Frette sheets. The shower has weak pressure. The adult pool is lovely. The gardens are great. There's just something a little off, but I'm not sure what.

This fabulous little gem of a hotel is under new management. I was there three years ago, and it was getting a little worn. But it's being redone from top to bottom. While some of the new rooms are not yet complete, our room was wonderful. New furnishings, woodburning fireplace nice bath. And a well trained attentive staff eager to please. ( I understand every room on the property has been redone.)
The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe is a perfect getaway spot for people from LA or even San Diego. It's close to everything in the San Diego area. And guests even have access to play at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. I'm not a golfer, but it's supposed to be a beautiful course.
Some fabulous wineries nearby make for a great daytrip. I was happy to just hang out with a book and enjoy the peace and quiet of the place.

What a lovely surprise! This tranquil retreat is beautifully laid out, the grounds are just lovely with fountains, large balconies for the rooms, hills, wood benches throughout and of course the golf view. The fancier of the two on-site restaurants, El Bizcocho, is I think the most beautifully laid out that I have seen in Southern California, where I live. It is also an incredible value: I had a 4-course menu for $55 and everything was outstanding! The crowd is mature, the service is perfect. I go to many 4-5 star resorts but this one has a special soul, particularly enhanced by the interesting collection of objects and statues in the expansive lobby.. There were one bridal shower, one wedding and one anniversary being celebrated while we were there, which told me others felt this is a special place too.

. Nice location. Was listed as a motel in the lonely planet guide, had been "upgraded" to hotel standards when we booked it - NOT! On arrival the staff were very laid back - so laid back the receptionist was having a cigarette outside! We were told our room had a sea view, however I think the customers at the World Famous restaurant had a better view of us. The room itself was fine, the bedlinen was v nice. there was no a/c just a fan. I had to ask for a hairdryer at reception as there was none in the room. I was asked to bring it back in case other guests needed to use it! We stayed during peak season and at $175 per night we found it to be seriously overpriced - I'd still class it as motel standard accommodation. A "hotel" only in name.

I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough - and I've stayed in lots of hotels, in many countries, at all levels of star ratings.
Very helpful and friendly staff on the front desk at check-in. In fact all the staff I met, whatever their role at the hotel, where friendly and helpful.
If you have a car secure underground parking is $15 per night (I think on a first come basis, we didn't have a car). There is some street parking, but follow the advice of the front desk as to where as I did hear her telling one guest that they do ticket every night in some places.
We booked an Executive Suite. This room was enormous! We had 2 king beds with a pillow top mattress type thing that was very comfortable. A sofa, 2 easy chairs, coffee table, desk & chair, 'proper' size dining table and chairs for 4 people. The kitchenette consisted of a sink, fridge, microwave, 3 elec ring stove top with small oven, coffee machine plus plates, cutlery, glasses etc and pots and pans.
My only minor quibble is the TV angled towards the beds, rather than the sofa, which meant I tended to drop-off to sleep on that very inviting bed of an evening and miss the end of whatever I was watching!
The bathroom was also huge with a 2 person jacuzzi, seperate shower stall and seperate WC also. The wardrobe is in the bathroom which sort of turns this room into a dressing-room. Lots of towels and toiletries and they topped up the toiletries each day too - not a thing that always happens. Lovely soap! There is a phone and TV in the bathroom. Two nice terry robes too.
Each evening, around 6.15/6.30pm, housekeeping would arrive and turn back the beds, leave chocolates on the pillow, draw the curtains, turn on the side lamps and leave the radio playing music for your return.

The hotel is beautifully nestled into the prestine setting of La Jolla. A perfect place for a getaway if you love to play golf and want to be close to the beach. (A 5 minute car ride). If you are in the mood for a little strolling and shopping, downtown la jolla is a 10 minute drive. I went to the hotel specifically for the spa, which I had read was very well rated. The spa facilities were beautiful appointed with a fresh clean feeling. I was hoping for a 'day spa' experience and was dispointed to learn that there was no indoor jacuzzi. (The pool outside is lovely, but it a far walk from the spa and it was a very cold day). My treatment, the A,C,E body treatment was expectional, but a friend had a massage she described as below average. If you are looking for a quick escape, with a fast spa treatment and a little golf this is an ideal hotel. If you are looking for a full service spa day while your honey is golfing, you may want to try some another near by facility.

Words can't even describe my disappointment with this hotel. As soon as we opened the door to our room we were blasted with a musty odor. Once inside we found that we could only open the windows about 2 inches so needless to say the smell was there for the long haul. The towels were about the size of a child's bath towel, and the shower head was about 5 feet high (making it rather tough for a 6'1" guy to shower. The only good part was that the sheets appeared to be clean. I would only recommend this hotel to somebody who is to tired to drive and can't find a better deal nearby.
