Villa Video is a fairly decent movie rental store near my residence. While I've seen better selection at Hollywood Video, I was impressed by their foreign films and television -on-disk available for rental. Prices aren't too bad, but watch out for the coupons. They're really specific (rental must cost between X and Y to get a certain amount off). Overall though, the employees have been mostly friendly to me, and it's really convenient.

It's hard to knock Southwest when you consider how they have impacted the cost of domestic flights. When SWA comes to your town, suddenly American and Delta are dropping their fares like crazy. Although I wouldn't call the "cattle call" free for all of grabbing any open seat a perfect experience for family travel, it's hard to beat it in price. Their Rapid Rewards program is also just as great-- my husband and I have each earned several free flights.

The National Museum of American History is chock full of exhibits all pertaining to American history and culture, and it's 100% absolutely free to get in. This is one of my favorite Smithsonians, mainly because there are even exhibits in the bathrooms (on the history of plumbing in the USA, of course!) The traveling exhibits are top notch, and the recently-renovated transportation hall, now called "America on the Move" is one of the best and well-designed exhibits I've ever experienced (and I'm a curator, so I should know). Great great great museum-- don't miss this.

The JP II Institute, as it's commonly referred to, is a fantastic attraction and a must-see for any Catholic visiting Washington, DC. It's a combination of a museum devoted to the Catholic faith, several galleries of traveling shows, and an exploratory, hands-on center for learning. It's a great place to spend the day with your family, and it's just a quick walk (or a shuttle, actually) from the National Basilica. Don't forget to check out their gift shop, too!

The Grand Concourse is easily one of Pittsburgh's most noted restaurants. Housed in an old train station, this grand restaurant is known for its elegant atmosphere, fantastic service, and phenomenal food. In my experience of this restaurant though, I didn't find the food all that amazing. I consider myself a "foodie," but this food just didn't measure up. If you're looking for the whole package, this definitely will do, but it comes at quite a high cost.

Rather than face the crowds (and the parallel parking) at Bridgeville, I opted to obtain my license at the Washington DMV. I actually like this one much better, mainly because you're tested on real roads, not just a course. If you drive around a bit before your exam, you can get a general feel for the area, which is no big deal. The examiners are much more laid back here, mostly because they get fewer permit and license tests. You can't get your photo ID here though, so get that photo card and head back to Bridgeville for that.

Come on, what's not to love about the DMV? This center is really large, always packed, and really busy. If you're looking for red tape and lots of paperwork, this DMV will make you feel right at home. You can take the PA permit test here via a computer screen evaluation. They also test young drivers for their junior licenses. A word to the wise- this is one of the harsher centers for drivers' tests. If you're not in the mood to parallel park, then head to the DMV in Washington.

I really don't know what the future holds for Great Southern. The day JC Penney's closed its doors, I think that was the beginning of the end for this former giant of a strip mall. Aside from the nearby Wendys, the few restaurants and carry-out shops, and the assorted craft stores, this mall needs some serious help. My family used to depend on many of the stores for everyday essentials, but the advent of closer and bigger malls might just mean the death of this outdated classic.

I don't know of anyone in the area who actually refers to this set of strip malls at the Char Valley Shopping Center. Instead, you usually hear, "You know, store *** by the DMV." It's a pretty big plaza though, with plenty of parking, a Big K Mart, a Home Depot, Dunham's Sports, and plenty of smaller stores filling the gaps. Destinta is next door if you're up for a movie. The only downside is that with the DMV so close by, be a cautious driver with all those permit-laden kids trying to park their parents' mini van.
