John O'Groats is another one of those places that marks the history of Los Angeles. They're an institution and they deserve another reminder to those of you who have just moved to Los Angeles or haven't been there in years, that they exist. They have the BEST lemon pancakes you'll ever find, along with several other versions to stimulate your taste buds. Paul (owner) runs around that place constantly always making sure the standards never slip and your meal is perfect. They're famous for their breakfast and lunch, but I think they may be doing dinners these days too, please call ahead to verify. This is another place that definitely has a line out the door, so be prepared. They may put your name on the list if you call ahead, worth giving it a try!

Maxwell's is located on the corner of Washington Blvd and Walgrove. They often sport a line on the weekends, so you want to get there early or just pour yourself a cup of coffee while you wait. They have many choices of sausages, veggie, chicken, etc as well as several options for sides with your breakfast that you might not find at other places. They have a counter for single seating, where I love to get good ol' fashioned cream of wheat with mixed berries. Their prices are fair and match the quality and generosity of the food. The service is friendly and the staff knows most everyone by name. I highly recommend this place, it's has a homey feel and a great menu and they bend over backwards to get you anything you want. So, if you want pancakes like mom used to make, head to Maxwell's.

Table 8 restaurant is a beautiful, elegant and very popular restaurant just West of Spaulding on Melrose Ave. As you walk in, it feels as if you've been transported to New York hip. There is a lounge and bar area where appetizers can be served while you wait for a table. They have a Euro/California menu and the food is fabulous. If you like your salads with items like goat cheese and beets or your entrées with light sauces that add flavor without trenching the original taste of the fish or meat, Table 8 has the ability to provide the perfect balance of extravagance without providing excessiveness. You'll be thrilled with the too, as they know how to answer your questions about the food and you know they eat there too, even on their days off.
Bon Appetite!

House of Records
I love promoting family owned businesses, as this is how our country was made and if we don’t continue to support people like this, it will also be how our country will fall.
So, House of Records, a small record and cd shop on the West Side of LA is a great place for finding all the old music, new music and hard to find music you’ve been searching for without having to feel stupid for liking something that’s not “in”. The guy that runs the shop (most days) is the sweetest and is willing to keep an eye out for ya and they give very fair prices on your exchanges. I also go there for many of the record labels newest releases because they sell them for a price you’d pay at a corporation like Best Buy or Target ($9.99), but I feel good knowing I’m helping a small business survive. Definitely check them out.

The Cow's End has been apart of the Marina Del Rey beach scene forever! You go there for a great Chai Latte and a bowl of Brazilian breakfast or for the deli counter added a year back. It's open and airy with an upstairs area. It's a great place to study over the traditional coffee house because the vibe there is calm and light-hearted with fresh ocean air! There's seating to accomadate large groups too. You have to bring cash, (just like the S & W cafe) otherwise your other option is the $2.00 ATM fee, ouch! The best thing about Cow's End is it's consistency, you'll always get a good coffee or tea and the food is simple and hearty. The line tends to be long, but hey, you're at the beach...what's the hurry?

This is the best fish shop (fresh and salt) you could find. Quin and Johnny are the two I recommend help you, as they know everything there is to know to guide you regarding what type of fish to buy for your tank. They’ll tell you which fish are best suited for the aquarium environment you’ve created and explain why they match or why they do not. They will never answer a question with, “cuz”. They’ll also guide you as to what live plants will work in your tank and explain which fish foods are best to give your mini Atlantis the variety your fish need for health and because, they like us, do not want the same meal every night. They never sell you on anything, just give you educated and informative information. I once made the mistake of going somewhere else, because it was closer, I’ll never do that again. The person who helped me could have cared less whether or not my fish “matched”, don’t think he knew the answer regardless and the fish were unhealthy and died quickly. Also, I just didn’t get the feeling he cared much for his fellow creatures, it seemed to be just a job to him. Not true of Quin and Johnny at, The Aquarium, they love what they do.

In the heart of Culver City sits the most popular breakfast spot for miles. It's a no frills no B.S. kinda joint where the waitress where tight jeans and bring ya 40 oz. cups of ice tea. Their salads are head lettuce or romaine, none of the fancy stuff here, but the service is fast and good. You'll need to bring the green stuff, as that's all they'll accept, no credit. For a coffee treat, get the one with cocoa and whipped cream. They have a million sandwiches with curly fries as an option, (now that's a diner!) and they'll always add a special request without making ya feel stupid. The owner's name is Michelle and she'll be there too, waiting on table's with the rest of the girls.
Closes at 3p.

Doughboys is a trendy restaurant on 3rd, just down the street from The Grove. I’ve gone a couple of times now, because I like the change of pace from the feel and the people on the West side of LA. I’ve wanted to love it, as it’s very popular, but I just can’t. The service there is done with an attitude of, “do I have to”? Never once did I get a smile, let alone, eye contact. The food I’ve had the last two times I’ve gone has been fairly good, not fair, not good, in between. Maybe I’ve just chosen the wrong items (hot breakfast cereal this time, can’t remember the last) and maybe I shouldn’t expect my coffee to arrive without having to ask for it twice. I do love the feel of the place, but that has more to do with the energy of that part of town and the guests and then the restaurant’s vibe. The host was a nice guy, he stood out because of it. Bottom line: go for the company you take and for the “cool” of an extended wait to sit and eat breakfast.
