Granted, my friend and I were there on a tuesday night, when any potentially-cool place could be worse than dead, but I'm okay in circumstances like that. Here, there were sprinklings of overweight women shouting at the television and overweight men sipping their overpriced beer. And, if you are going to go to the Wabash Tap, I'd recommend a beer: my martini was really overpriced and I felt like a big fucking snob for drinking it in the place. The music went with the martini, however- salty and popular and pretty much worthless. Still, it's strange to see such a disjoint between the people and the atmosphere- The Wabash Tap is a sports bar with sports bar people posing as a bourgeois hangout.
I guess it's sort of reflective of the area: the south loop is becoming gentrified, retaining streaks of the old blue-collar concern. Still, what's the deal? How come old neighborhooders hang out there when there are cheaper, cooler and far grittier places?
