James Alan Salon, in Shoreline, is a neighborhood gem. I was bouncing around from salon to salon but never found the right place to get my hair cut until I started going to James Alan over a year ago. I enjoy a good hair cut, but have very low-maintenance hair and sometimes that throws stylists off. They want to put 'product' in my hair or blow it out in some wacked-out fashion. Not only does the staff at James Alan give superb hair cuts, they actually listen. I've never left feeling as if I got a cut that I didn't like or want. (Ask for Christina!). They also offer spa services--I've had a pedicure. The staff seem genuinely happy and I think that comes from how they are treated as employees. I know the owners are highly involved in the community and it seems that employees are encouraged to do the same. It feels good to support a business that tries to create a healthy work environment for their employees.

After reading the reviews of Via Tribunali, it's clear I've been living under a rock. I had heard the pizza was authentic and delicious, but I had no idea what a scene it was. It was Friday night, but after being told we would have to wait an hour we just decided to order the pizza to go. Our order came quickly (within 10 minutes) so we enjoyed the pizza without all the trappings of a scene. The pizza did not disappoint--cooked to perfection. We may try to go back during "off hours" so as to avoid the crowds.

I like Casa D. Really, I do. As a native New Yorker and Italian, I think I have a solid foundation on good Italian food. And the food at Casa D is good. But I was incredibly disappointed by the service--in particular the service by the owner--at my last visit. Granted, this was over a year ago (haven't been back since) so maybe I just caught him on a bad day. I brought a party of 15+ people (called to make reservations well in advance) one evening. It was the summer and it was stifling hot in the dining area, so I requested we be seated outside. We were also crammed in like sardines and there was room outside. But they could not accommodate us nor did anyone make an effort to acknowledge our discomfort and we sweat our way through dinner. I'm a reasonable person, but this experience left such a poor feeling that I've vowed not to go back. Again, it could have been an off night and I can say that the food is good. But there are other good places to eat, I'll take my business elsewhere.

I can't even imagine paying $8-$9/lb for olives when I can head on over to PFI's and get them for practically half that! And good olives they are! The grocery section has a good selection, but may not be the the most economical. I have found some Italian products that you can't find anywhere outside of NYC.

Pete's is what a breakfast place should be--consistently good food with nothing too fancy (you won't find "hand picked forest mushrooms" on the menu) and they provide exceptional service. The fresh squeezed OJ is well worth it. There are photos of customers and family adorning the walls and who can forget the remote controlled spider in the corner...

Girls on the Run is a national program that helps girls (ages 8-11) build self esteem, learn about healthy living all centered around non-competitive running. The local chapter (girlsrun.org) is thriving and is by far one of my favorite orgs around. It's primarily volunteer run, and they really understand the development of young girls, particularly at an age where they are gearing up to prepare for adolescence. It gives girls, from those who are currently athletic to those who could use some motivation, to participate in an activity together and not feel pressured by 'winning'. Each girls sets her personal goal and works over a 12 week period to reach it. My volunteer experience has been fulfilling. In particular running with a girl who was clearly not succeeding in any other sports, and being there when she finished her first 5k race.

Matt's in the Market is one of those places that Seattle foodies love but given its size is not the first restaurant recommended. Or maybe everyone would love to keep this gem for themselves. Either way, Matt's is splendid! Food, excellent. Wine selection, outstanding. Service, top-notch. Atmosphere, cozy (but never feels cramped). You'll need reservations, so call ahead.

I ended up here completely by chance and it hit the spot! Yummy food (a good selection of meat/fish/veggie dishes) and amazingly affordable. The fish cost us something like seven or eight dollars and the veggie dish about the same. It's nothing fancy, but if you want a filling and tasty meal, visit the Pan Africa Market Restaurant. Plus, they have African beer, which is just a fun novelty.

We've heard great things about La Medusa and every time my husband and I drove by we would be reminded that we should go. Just recently, we finally made our reservation. The space is charming and warm. I loved the fact that the kitchen was visible. The food and service were good. But what my husband and I truly expected was Sicilian food, not PNW meets someone who once went to Italy. Don't get me wrong, the Tuna Ragu was yummy and my husband's Pollo was wonderful but I'm not sure we'd make it a habit to dine here.
