Apparently the Zig Zag has a following for their cocktails, however I'm not sure I know what all the hype is all about. On a recent post-work mini happy hour we headed there before dinner. First of all, they have a limited selection of appetizers. I understand the idea of specializing and doing it well, however the list wasn't too appealing to go along with drinks. Most of the "appetizers" were glorified antipasti platters, which is fine, but if thats not what you are in the mood for then it really doesn't work. I started off the evening with a ketel one and tonic, good simple, clean & refreshing. However after seeing the bartender make what appeared to be a stellar mojito, I decided to order one. It took almost 20 minutes for it to arrive and the bar was empty except for one other table beside us, obviously not swamped. When it arrived, It was good, but really not worth 20 minutes. Then when the bill arrived, my 20 minute mojito cost $9. I'm sorry but a drink better be pretty strong for nine bucks. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but not worth the wait or the amount.

I just did the $25 for $25 at Nishino and what a deal for the ultimate sushi in Seattle. Everything from the miso soup to the sorbets were outstanding. The yellow tail appetizer was phenomenal, fresh, subtle hints of chive, but most of all, a good quality fish with flavor. I cannot say how much of deal, the $25 for $25 is- this included an appetizer, assorted sushi with rolls and a dessert. Our party ordered an extra roll- I'm actually not quite sure what was in the roll- most likely yellow tail, but all I can say is wow! Prices are a bit higher than most sushi places in the area, however if you are looking to celebrate a special occasion or just want good sushi, then go go go. Also, I was impressed that most of the people in the restaurant were actually Japanese, not just Americans, which is usually a good sign. Based upon the reviews I'd like to try the Omakase dinner sometime. Next time, I think I'll sit at the bar, which allows you to be more adventurous.

I finally had the chance to try the restaurant in Ballard that everyone is talking about, Volterra. I'm in love!
Think sexy but classic. My dinning companion mentioned that the restaurant felt like a home dining room, which from understanding is exactly what the goal of the establishment is, to transport you to Tuscany. Volterra is not red-checkered table cloth Italian rather authentic Tuscan.
Almost immediately when we were seated, a bottle of Trampetti Olive Oil was placed on our table. This olive oil is spectacular. Used in other restaurants such as Crow and Primo Grill (Tacoma) and sold at Metropolitan Market for upwards of $25 a bottle, this is not Food Services of America jug olive oil. Volterra was already on the 5 star track at this point, but then they continued to impress me with their cocktails. I first tried the Mandarin Basil Drop- perfection. A basil leaf floated on the top with slight hints of basil and Mandarin vodka. However, my other drink, Rosemary Drop with house made limoncello vodka blew my socks off- the best cocktail I've ever had.
Regardless, don't go to Volterra for just their cocktails. The food was divine. Our waiter described many of the foods for us not only explaining taste, but also origin. For example the wild boar prosciutto from Salumi is not sold at his store rather only made for Volterra and few other select restaurants in the city. Believe me, I wish that he did because I have never taste such a rich and complex prosciutto. Next, I sampled their homemade buffalo ricotta ravioli. Now here is my only complaint, the portion was a little small and it could of been a bit more warm. Tender pasta with a side of kale! My friend ordered their venison pasta which was a ragu of venison and pasta, which was also perfectly done and a much larger portion than mine.
Last, but definitely not least was the chestnut panna cotta with honey and strawberries. All I can say is orgasmic and so rich that I could not finish my dessert and normally I do at nicer restaurants.
I am looking forward to my next visit to Volterra. I want to try the Wild Boar Tenderloin. If you want good Italian, I urge you to try Volterra.

The Hilltop has good bar food, not your average fried food fest, rather healthy options. Strong selection of micro brew beers and foreign brews. The Ahi sandwich and Reuben are both flavorful creations. They have a daily homemade soup. I tried the corn chowder, which was good, but I wasn't particularly impressed. Everything is extremely fresh and good sized portions which will not leave you hungry. I'm not sure if this a good nighttime hangout place to meet new people, but definitely a chill place to kick back and socialize with friends.

I got my second tattoo at House of Tattoo and was extremely impressed. Andre my artist developed a unique design based upon some examples and ideas we discussed. He was extremely professional and detailed orientated. He had a great eye for color and explained to me why he picked certain color combinations. I was extremely please with the job he did and felt very little discomfort during the tattoo. I've referred multiple people to him and all have been thrilled with the results.

I've been shopping at whole foods for years now. I started in California and now that I'm in Seattle, I've rediscovered my love for this place. Although it is mass market chain organic, they are truly committed to local food and often tell you where the apples come from. The cheese department is superb- they will give you sample of cheeses, which is always good since when spending more than $20 a pound for cheese, you better know you like it! Regardless, the selection, freshness and variety surpasses any other market in the area. Be prepared to spend money, with all of the temptations you will not get out cheap.

I've been going to Melissa at Attitudes for about a year now and have been consistently happy with the quality of haircut and color. If you are looking for a "Gene Juarez" salon experience, this is not the place, however if you want a friendly, casual salon where the people have some spunk then check it out. Prices are reasonable and its extremely low key so its easy to relax. Both Melissa and Theresa will be extremely honest with you if the cut or color will compliment you. Plus, they are great at mixing things up a bit so you don't have the same old routine if you don''t want to get stuck in a rut, but like the general style. Also, they have a commitment to quality products. They recently switched lines and when I asked why, they explained their commitment to a quality product and using one that isn't mass market. They also offer waxing, tanning and have a small nail station.

This is a place that the bartenders will talk to you or leave you alone to chat, read or do a cross-word puzzle. In the back there is darts, shuffleboard (be prepared to wait to play) and pool.

I've only been to Lark once, but I have to admit I was impressed by the new "in" eating spot in town thats been the talk of the foodies in Seattle.
We started with a cheese coarse of three cheeses- all were excellent- served at the correct temperature and the honey comb went well with the goat/sheep based cheeses.
We tried a fish dish, which was good, but not spectacular. However, the crispy duck was amazing, you must try it if is on the menu. We also tried the special- an escargot tart with potatoes, bacon and caramelized onions. The escargot was a bit tough, however everything else was perfect- a flaky, rich buttery puff pastry.
Lastly, I ordered the pear tart tatin- perfect. My friend loves the lemon parfait.

They carry the Solid Gold pet food, which is great quality and can actually explain to you the benefits of feading your animal a higher quality pet food (hence why alpo is bad for your pet).
They also run a doggie day care, which is fantastic. If you care about personal attention and people who are going to care/pay attnetion to your dog, then this place is for you. My dog is small, so he goes on the small dog day. My dog adores Morgan the store manager.
