This Theatre is a Chicago Landmark. Designed by Adler and Sullivan, it has long be noted for its perfect acoustics and timeless design.
A great place to see dance or hear a musical performance, it offers the consummate theatre experience. It sat neglected for many years and was finally refurbished and returned to its original glory, and reopened to a grateful public.
This is the place to see the class acts, the Bolshoi Ballet, Alvin Ailey, the Joffrey, Les Mis, etc. Treat yourself and your loved ones

They are twinkling stars and puffy clouds floating across the ceiling, old time seats, the smell of popcorn, and of course sticky floors. Everything you need for the complete movie experience.
They publish a playbill of up and coming attractions which you can find around the 'hood or in the Reader.
A Chicago treasure.

Cook county hospital was a place that I associated with po' folks, long waits, and mediocre service at best.
Circumstances in my life changed such that I was temporarily one of those 'po folks in need of medical attention, and I didn't have insurance.
Some one close to me had used this place and gotten help so I thought I would try it.
I got in line and found that the wait was not that long. I got the medical services and tests I needed from a competent doctor who did a decent job, taking time to answer all my questions.
Getting my prescription filled was another story. It never happened after wasting a lot of time in line.
So the place scores a C for medical service and an F for its pharmacy.

I have to admit I have not seen the new space on Dearborn! All my memories are of the old space a few blocks away on the west side of the Art Institute.
I remember the curved red velvet seats that hugged your back, and that amazing gold curtain that really looked like it was made out of solid gold, not fabric at all.
I remember the magic world that I could get lost in for awhile when that curtain opened. Then you would walk back outside after the show, and the world would be new.

This is your basic classic old theatre space. There is a big stage with a curtain, multiple levels of seating with boxes on the side and balconies above the main seating area.
It is a fun place to see a show and every time I have been there the crowd has been rowdy and vocal. Of course it does depend on who is performing.
They have all kinds of performances here; rock, comedy, movies, etc. The neighborhood that this space is located in has a lot of hip young people and so most of the shows attract this group.

All the seats in the house are close enough to the stage that you can hear and see very well. They are a visual act with their colorful costumes and dance moves and we could see perfectly.
I think the time before that was Odetta. Again sound and sight lines were ideal. One of her trademarks is to put a stick of burning incense in the neck of her guitar. That smell soon filled the space, adding to the flavor of the music.

I usually go here to listen to my favorite singer songwriter friend Julie Frost create her magic in this classic coffee house setting.
The stage is raised just enough, the lighting is just right, and anywhere you sit is close and intimate. The sound is good enough so you can hear the lyrics.
The air is smoke free, the coffee and pastries are great, the food is good too. The management of this place does a good job of creating a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.
I have also attended workshops here, met friends to hang out, or just came for an espresso and a pastry.

Rich Melman's take on lunch is a sure winner. These cafeteria style places are all over the area now and worth a visit if you want a good lunch.
Great salads, soups and sandwiches are the basic fare, with all of the regular beverages, good coffee and teas and desserts too. The bread is freshly baked, which provides the theme.
Lettuce Entertain you restaurants have the virtue of consistency; you know you are going to get good food and decent service at a fair price.
What more could you ask?

These great classic Italian restaurants are part of Rich Melman's Lettuce Entertain you restaurant empire but they are still worth recommending. This guy just knows what people want in a restaurant.
Red checkered table cloths, huge portions of classic Italian dishes perfectly cooked, reasonable prices, good service, no wonder his places are so popular.
They also have the virtue of consistency. Like Mickey D's, you know what you are going to get when you get there, and they don't disappoint you.
The Corner Bakery is often attached to these stores, and you get more of the same there; great lunches; sandwiches and salads, etc.

They do good work here. Great, fresh sea food properly cooked, attentive service, enjoyable ambiance; its all here.
Pictures of some of their suppliers grace the walls of the Oyster bar, which has a cajun theme. They have live music a few nights a week, or go next door to Andy's before or after you eat and enjoy some great jazz.
I have always had good experiences in this place. They have other locations too which I have not been to.Worth a visit!
