Tell me if this sound familiar. You're wacky and slightly eccentric friend is having a birthday/wedding/housewarming coming up and you know anything from Targets or Tiffany's will be looked upon with disdain. What to do? Take my advice. Head down to Etcetera for a quick and quirky gift for all occassions. Trust me this store makes a living selling weird objects d'art and knick knacks for the Phoebe Buffay in our lives.

Stepping inside the Cloisters is like stepping taking a step back into time and landing smack dab in the Middle Ages. You get taken back to a time where King Arthur and the Round Table ruled the lands and ladies in waiting give their favors to knights. The gardens are eerily serene and elegant and the Unicorn trapesties are a beautiful work of art. It's a great place to spend the day either by yourself or on a date. The admission fee is also extremely low so cheapie score.

Newly renovated with an elevator, more floors and a bathroom that's not too scary Strands is the best used book store in the city. Even with the new renovations the books are still a little disorganized so if you are on a search for a specific book you will be doing some digging a la Indiana Jones style. Don't bother getting any books about New York. They are usually out of date. Stick with the fiction books or any hard to find books from decades ago. That's where you'll find the real gold.

The museum of modern art is one of the weirdest, existensial and interesting museums in New York. If you can afford the twenty dollar admission fee or if you don't mind waiting until after 4pm on Fridays for the free admission drop by and take a look around. You can look at artworks by famous artists Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollack. Or you can stop by their gift shop and load up on interesting stocking stuffers for Christmas.

Tiffany's and their cute little blue bag is as much a New York landmark as the statue of liberty or the naked cowboy at Times Square. The jewerly here is grade A upper class and very elegant. You won't find any funky cosmetic jewerly here. They also have different floors for paper weights, writing utensils and other stuff for decorating your house. If you have the money to spare and want something made with quality buy something nice for yourself.

Don't be fooled by the small size of fashion soup. Inside they have a great variety of soups and empanadas. They soups are delicious and they always offer you a sample of any soup you want. Personally I go for the empanadas. They have chicken parmigan, ham & cheese, pizza, regular meat and they even started doing breakfast so bacon & eggs empanadas. Delicious. Call ahead for the breakfast empanadas so they are ready when you arrive.

Chinatown Ice Cream is one of those shops that is hard to find but worth the search. The lines are often very long on warm days but the ice cream is totally worth it. Don't bother trying to eat inside. The store is too small. They have the usual Chocolate/Strawberry/Vanilla staples as well as lychee and marshmallow and some other weird flavors I can't remember offhand. Next time you're in Chinatown stop by and have a cone.

Probably one of the worst malls in New York if not the country. This store literally has nothing interesting or cool to offer in way of shops or events. The only good things about this mall is the free samples at the food court and the fact you can take the N or R train on the lower level. Take my advice. Skip the mall and head over to Macy's two blocks over instead.

Not suitable for kids but very suitable for adults. Every kind of sex toy you could think of or ever heard about on Sex and the City they have. Upon entering you walk down this long hallway into a bright pink room filled with after hour play things and sex tapes and lots and lots of books including the Karma Sutra. The staff is very friendly and informative. There are a bunch of fliers and magazines to take home about sex and workshops they offers so check those out. Check Bust magazine for coupons to their online store.

Buddha Bar is a fifteen square foot restaurant that has two dining rooms, a sushi and cocktail bar, a comfy lounge and a bunch of antique Buddhas that were impotred from Paris, India and Thailand. The food itself is very delicious. They make french and asian food. The scallops are to die for. There's dinner music always playing to give the place a feeling of comfortable relaxing ambience.
