Whether you already have five credit cards or none, you may want to look into getting the Chase credit card – especially if you are the type who manages your money well and pays off your balance each month. We used to be the kind of family that never used our credit cards, but now we use our Chase card for ALL our purchases. Why? You may ask…well, they give us money to use the card! We enrolled in their rewards program that pays you 1% back on all purchases and 5% back on gas, grocery and drugstore purchases. For us, this has turned into a check from them for about $50 every couple of months. Not only do we have the convenience of paying by credit card, but they pay us to do it.
I would not recommend this plan for anyone with credit problems, as it do not receive cash back on interest and will quickly lose any savings that way. But, if you are a good money manager – this card will literally work for you!

After discovering the high cost of printer cartridges, I knew there had to be a better way! Then I saw an ad for Cartridge World and figured it was worth a try. Cartridge World allows you to take in your old cartridges and have them refilled. In most cases, you save half the price of buying them new and also help the environment by reducing waste. What surprised me was that they don’t actually refill your specific cartridge, but instead instantly give you one of the same types that have already been refilled. Therefore you do not have to wait; you can have instant gratification – just like buying new.
We did have one problem with a cartridge – so we took it back. They were VERY accommodating and tested the cartridge to discover it was not working correctly. For our hassle they gave us a 10% off coupon toward our next purchase, plus an instant replacement. They guarantee that the cartridges will last as long as the new ones, and as far as we can tell they do. So, if you are looking to save money – this is certainly worth a try.

After being invited to a wedding in Cottage Grove, we decided to stay at the Holiday Inn Express because it was the only hotel that had rooms available for pets. We were pleased that they allowed us a pet room and a non-smoking room, as many hotels we have brought our dogs to in the past would force us to stay in a stinky smoke-soaked room just because we had a dog. The rooms were nicely decorated, clean and in good shape, but were long and narrow which actually made them feel cramped and slightly uncomfortable for moving around. I also did not like the bathroom as it was so tiny, that it was almost impossible to close the door while standing inside.
We did enjoy their free continental breakfast – as they had a nice variety of choices both healthy and some treats like Danishes and sugary cereal. The front desk was reasonably friendly and the cleaning staff was quick to jump and get the rooms cleaned as quickly as possible.

I currently work at home and use Verizon DSL for my Internet service. As my business relies on a consistent accurate Internet connection, it is important that the service I use is outstanding. Unfortunately, I would not describe Verizon as outstanding in customer service, but luckily they have never caused problems that affect my ability to work. In general, my Internet connection is fine with a consistently good speed and reliability of connection. My problems with Verizon stem from their inability to help you with problems. We have had to wait for up to 2 hours on hold to ask a technical support question. My husband has also spent over 3 years at one time trying to work through installation problems. Verizon has made changes over the years to their services causing us to have to make new arrangements on managing our web use and connection. Even though the changes have been on their end, trying to work through them was extremely difficult. I also have Verizon as my home phone service and never had the same type of customer services issues as I have with their online division.

We just finished a round a swim lessons for my child at the Gresham High School pool. After trying lessons at a couple other places, we were struggling with finding a good program. Quite a few other families from the Grade School recommended Gresham’s swim instruction, so we thought we would give it a try. Given the poor condition of the facilities and the young ages of the instructions, I was rather surprised by how well my child did in her lessons. The instructors are teenagers, but the main program director is an adult – who is very active in the program, even getting in the pool to help the other instructors with their classes. The building is very old and in a bad state of disrepair. I am actually rather anxious that my children will be attending this High School someday because the bathrooms by the pool were literally falling apart – the ceiling had caved in!!! That aside, I would still consider trying lessons there again because the price was the best around and my child did the best she ever has swimming.

My dad bought me my first AAA membership when I first started driving as a teenager. Over the past twenty years, I have maintained that membership. During that time, AAA has opened numerous keys locked in the car, brought me gas, fixed my battery and towed my car to the mechanic. I have also utilized their services for discounts on events, entertainment, museums and motels. I have been referred to a variety of great mechanics that are AAA certified and visited their tour office for free maps and travel advice.
In these twenty years, I have only one complaint - sometimes it took as long as two hours for a tow truck to arrive. Overall, my experience has been positive, but honestly I have never used any other kind of service as a comparison. AAA is certainly well known and reliable, plus is carried with the individual so you can use it even when you’re with your friends. Definitely a great gift for a young person starting to drive.

Since the schools hurting for money these days, many of them are asking for more help from the parents. The first step in this process is the list we all receive of the supplies we must bring to school that first day… can you believe it… scissors are on the list!!! Plus, we don’t even get to label them; they all have to be shared. Well, sharing is an important concept, so we all try to cooperate. But, if you are not careful, the cost of these supplies can quickly add up.
The last couple of years I have discovered that in July, Wal-Mart provides a service to our community by offering up these types of supplies for truly pennies. 10 cents will buy you a whole box of crayons! Whether you have kids in school, run a day care or want to stock up on your home stash, go to Wal-Mart in July and save yourself some money!

My favorite long-time cell phone company has been Qwest. Everytime I go out and comparison shop, I still keep coming back to them. They even gave me two weeks free so I could review other companies and still keep their service. When money was tight they worked out a plan for me so I could still afford a cell phone.
What I love most about them is they work with me and the customer service is always helpful and supportive. I never have to wait forever on hold or be the bad guy in order to get my problems solved. While their coverage area is not as extensive as the competition, they have been a great company for me.

Most of the reviews I have read on Judy's book give outstanding recommendations for restaurants. Portland can actually be a rather big place... so it may depend on what part of town you will be in... but here are a few of my favorites...
1. NW 21st and 23rd... Almost any restaurant along these streets is worth a try.
2. Greek Cuisine downtown is worth the eating and entertaining experience.
3. In the Hawthorn area, Barley Mill Pub or Bridgeport Brewery are both great hang out pubs with friendly atmospheres.
4. Adobe Rose is a must visit in the Sellwood area.
5. Any Typhoon restaurant around the area… there are a couple to choose from… if you love Thai food!

The word on the street is that bowling is coming back! Well, if you still remember the days gone by, come to a bowling alley like AMF Rockwood. I doubt they have updated since the 70s. We took a group of preschoolers and everyone had a great time. They raised the bumpers which gave the kids confidence to build their skills. In the heart of Rockwood renewel, what a great way to support a struggling area and have a great time with your family visiting Rockwood Lanes.
