Simply Desserts is just that--a tiny shop in Fremont that only sells desserts, plus coffee and tea to enjoy with your dessert of choice. Our favorites include the white chocolate/strawberry cake--2 layers of white cake with a fabulous frosting and fresh strawberries--and the blueberry/lemon cake(only available seasonally, but worth the trip). They also have several chocolate varieties, and they sell by the slice or whole cake. There are even little candles for sale to put on a birthday cake! If you love cake, you have got to try Simply Desserts.

I converted to Mud Bay a little over a year ago, and it was a great move. They stock natural pet food and litter, and have informational sheets to help you choose the right stuff. My cats love the Nutro food and their wheat litter, and I feel good about using products that are good for them and not harmful to the environment. Plus the selection of cat toys is the best around, and they always carry fresh catgrass. The section for dogs is even bigger; they also have leashes, kennels and tons of other supplies. Best of all--I can always find street parking at the Greenwood location. For all these reasons and more, I highly recommend Mud Bay.

If you're feeling confused about all the insurance options out there, Elizabeth Estep is a great agent to work with. I have a Lifewise plan that she helped me choose and it's worked out pretty well so far. She even came to my neighborhood coffee shop to meet with me! As far as the actual insurance goes, depending on how much you want to pay per month, you can get a wide variety of coverage options. I went with a pretty basic plan since I don't go to the doctor that often, but it still covers eye appointments and some hardware, plus an annual physical. If anything major happens, full insurance coverage kicks in after a certain amount of deductible. Elizabeth can help you figure out which plan is best for you, but I recommend getting at least a basic plan--it's cheap compared to the alternative of hospital bills.

Whenever I need a gift for my best friend's young daughter I head to Clover. Their selection of hand-crafted wooden toys from Germany, puzzles of all difficulties and lots more make this store the best choice for a children's gift you can feel good about. The kitchen toys alone have me hooked; they have little stainless steel pots and porcelain pie plates that can actually be used, plus kid-sized cooking utensils. Makes me wish I was a kid again! Clover also has beautiful, if expensive, clothing and wonderful baby gifts, plus everything you'd need to outfit a (very stylish) nursery.

Bella Cosa opened a year and a half ago and Wallingford's been eating better ever since. The front of the store offers imported pasta, rice, Scarpetta sauces, and lots more ingredients to help you prepare an excellent meal. In their deli case you can find cured meats from Salumi plus a delicious selection of cheeses, olives and now caviar. Head to the back of the store for cool housewares and cookbooks, perfect for your kitchen or a gift for a gourmet friend. Be sure to stop by the wines, too; if you need help choosing anything, the knowledgable staff can point you in the right direction.

I've now been to Volterra for brunch and dinner, and both times the food and service were excellent. Last night I ordered the shrimp and porcini risotto; it was so refreshing to order a dish with shrimp that actually contained more than 3 shrimp, but beyond that the risotto was delicious. I also sampled the lobster ravioli and sauteed jumbo prawns--both excellent. A bottle of Chianti wasn't too expensive and complemented the meal; it also went well with the starter plate of cured meats! Brunch at Volterra is equally good, with even larger portions. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly; overall, a great place to take a date or your family.
Addendum, May 2006: we just went again recently, at 6:30 on a Friday night, with no reservation, and they seated us immediately at a GREAT table. Food was delicious, the sommelier recommended wonderful wines to go with our entrees, and our server Steven couldn't have been nicer. I just love this place.

New Kowloon on 9th and Jackson is my absolute favorite. The selection is huge and everything is super fresh, plus most things are steamed so it's not too greasy. My favorites include the BBQ humbow, shrimp dumplings, and the fried sesame ball with red bean paste. Another big plus about New Kowloon is that it's super cheap! Only one warning--to get the best selection and service you need to go between 11-1:30. They serve dim sum from 10-3, but if you go too early not everything is ready, and if you're too late the staff is already eating their lunch so it's hard to get served.

I was never a huge donut fan until I went to Mighty-O for the first time 2 years ago. Their donuts are both vegan and organic, 2 words that you don't normally associate with donuts, but they made a convert out of me and now I prefer Mighty-O to anywhere else. The donuts are super moist, kind of like eating cake, and not too sweet. My favorites include the Don King (chocolate with coconut on top), Lots O'Chocolate, and the simple perfection of Cinnamon & Sugar. Yum!

Sonic Boom always has their new CDs on sale, sometimes for as little as $8.99 depending on the artist, but usually around $10-12. They also feature lots of local bands, and what better gift than to introduce someone to their new favorite group? If you need some ideas the staff is super helpful; if you're feeling shy just check out the wall of staff picks--they won't lead you astray. Of course there's always the Sonic Boom gift certificate, which is a sure bet.
