Books & Co. is at Brookwood mall. They have the best selection of books in Birmingham. The atmosphere is very nice, reminiscent of Barnes and Nobles, before they turned B&N into the Wal-Mart of bookstores. Of course, because it is a Books-a-Million company, the resident coffee shop is Joe Muggs. Joe Muggs, is not the place to get a mocha, or any espresso based drink. They do have good regular coffee, though. I like to swing through a Starbucks on my way there.

Fred's is a for sure "hole in the wall". He has the best chicken strips anywhere, they come with this wonderful dip of Fred's invention.

The atmosphere is fun and always lively.
Parking is great and there are lots of shops around him, so you can walk off those chicken strips afterward.
Prices are very reasonable, his chicken is cheaper than Chick-fil-a and much better.

They have good coffee, their espresso based drinks are not as good as some other companies' , however the atmosphere and the regular coffee more than makes up for that. They have a children's corner with a TV and VCR and toys. They have a book section, where you can get a book, or trade a book on an honorary system basis. They have tables and overstuffed couches and coffee tables.
They have great black bean soup, but don't bother with the sandwiches (very light on the fillings). The lady who owns it is so sweet.
Parking - Spotty at best.
Service - Great
Food - So-So
Coffee - Excellent
Espresso - Just stick with the coffee.
Ambience - Perfect place to curl up with a book and a cup of coffee, or to meet with friends.

Jade Palace is one of the best Chinese places around. They have a buffet during the lunch hours, it is incredible!! The restaurant is very clean! The food is always fresh and the selection is incredible. They have banana fritters on the buffet that are perfectly addictive.
In the evening they do not have the buffet, but their menu is huge and everything they have is great!
Customer service is great.
Parking - Very convenient

Prices - very reasonable for such great food and service.

What all can I say about this place. It is so perfect. The food is incredible, the ambiance is out of this world, service is impeccable. If you like, you can sit at the bar and watch the open kitchen and all the chefs work, which is so fascinating.
The menu changes often, because everything is cooked per season, most of the herbs and vegetables are grown by the owner and everything else is bought from local farmers.
Try the shrimp and grits.
They usually have a Jazz band on the weekends.
Price: Slightly High, worth every penny

I went to this place with a simple request, when I asked how much a whole spool of ribbon would cost, I was told that it was sold by the yard. I then asked how many yards was on a spool. The woman at the desk glared at me and informed me that she did not know. I then asked her if she would measure out some for me, because I wanted to buy 2 spools. She gave a heavy sigh and started measuring the ribbon out. She shoved all the loose ribbon in a bag and told me how many yards it was. At this point I was just ready to get out of the store. The price was outrageous, also. Typically if the prices are outrageous, you at least expect to get decent service.
Price - Ridiculous

Advice - Go to Hancock's Fabrics, or the Cotton King

Manicures - Gail and Bridgette and Kioko, they are all great! I can't recommend one, because they are all equally fabulous.
Hair - Nina, Darlene, and Jodi - These are a few who have been there since I can remember, and they are all excellent. (be careful don't make Nina mad, she'll curse you in Greek, just kidding, I think she's taking her hormones recently)
Prices - Reasonable, all the operators set their own prices based a lot on experience.

My husband always buys my flowers there. He would bring them to me at work and they would last for at least a week, some of the roses would last almost 2 weeks!! I got all the flowers from my wedding there, I was making all the arrangements myself and they invited me to stay and make them there, so that they could help me with whatever I needed. They were so wonderful.
They gave me great advice and made me feel as if I was the only person in the store.

I got my daughter's Birthday cake there and my wedding cake. The people at this store are incredible. The cake is perfect. They will sit down with you (very patiently) and figure out just what you need. My daughter's cake was a carousel cake, and they did not have a real template for it, they just asked me what I wanted and drew it out for me and when I got it, it was perfect. The Birthday party was at the Galleria and everyone who passed, stopped and asked me where I got that cake.
Prices - Very reasonable, for the individualized product you get. Their cakes cost more than at a grocery store, but they are so much better, and much more original.
Customer Service - Everyone I have encountered in that shop has been so nice and helpful.

This is one of the best stores in Birmingham, they have the cutest toys. They have a lot of things that are "old-fashioned", the kind of toys that Wal-Mart should carry but doesn't. You can get lost in this place, it's not very big, but it is fascinating.
Prices vary, some things are pricey, some things are more than reasonable.
