"Sweet local sushi bar run by a lovely husband and wife team Shoko and Hide. Shoko is a really talented Koto player and has been known to sit down for a spontaneous performance during dinner which is quite magical. The sushi is really good too.
* I was just there last night (03/10/2005) Had the most amazing marinated baby squid and seaweed salad, and a wonderful sake I'd never tried before.. The Udon was great, and my sashimi was very good, made me wonder why I've not been going there more often."

"I love this place, but then, I'm friends with them, it makes me a little biased. Still, some of the best pizza in the city and my absolute favorite wine list - Update- the fungi pizza has had a makeover and is even closer to perfection than before, tiny mushrooms of every form, oyster, trumpet, shitake and cremini all earth and musk. It's fragrant with garlic and drizzled with peppery new seasons olive oil. It is a must order, as is the fresh buffalo mozzarella baratta, all white purity with it's heart of cream."

Ambitious and passionate cooking, the food here strives towards greatness and sometimes succeeds. Disguised as a haute diner, all silvered surfaces and acid green, Canteen could be the set of a David Lynch film. On Wednesday nights there is a set menu, that's right, no choice and you'll like it. I did like it, you probably will too.
*Update: I just got back from lunch here, and everything was fantastic.
We started with an amuse of a sliver of tuna crudo garnished with lime, then a warm vichyssoise with crab and parsley, my friend had a spectacular halibut ceviche with avocado, cucumber and whole freshly roasted coriander seed while I had a perfect smoked salmon sandwich accompanied by hand cut, fried to order potato chips. If that wasn't enough, even the home made cranberry sorbet sent out to finish was a wonderful cool balance of sweet and tart. Canteen is new and undiscovered, I assure you though, it won't remain so for long

Maybe the most authentic of all the King of Thai chain, the snow fungus salad is cool, and sure to gross out less adventurous companions. For the meek, the Pad Thai is very good too."
