The Fresh Fish Company is located in Ballard, inside a convenience store! The owners of the Fresh Fish Co., actually own the convenience store too. These people know fish. If it isn't extremely fresh, they are not going to carry it. They often have smoked salmon collars, but you have to get there early. During the holidays, they always have many samples laid out. Other times, all you have to do is ask. We tried some fresh, not frozen king crab legs that were to die for. We are never disappointed when we purchase dungeness crab there. In fact, we are never disappointed with anything purchased there - salmon, oysters, pickled herring...yummy.

It's the Ballard Market on 15th in Ballard. This store has the greatest produce of any market around. It's always very fresh, and their displays are inviting. It's not always the best price, but it doesn't even compare with whole wallet! The meat is not the best, although they do carry some oregon country beef, if you're in to that. The wine selection is marvelous, and the olive bar is high quality.

I like the remodeled Bay Theater on Market in Ballard. The seats are really comfy, the theater and bathrooms are very clean, and they have good popcorn with real butter (shame!) It's not hard to find parking on the street. In the larger of the theaters, someone announces the movie, and tells you about it being an independently owned business. I've been there to have t-shirts thrown in to the audience. Just a little extra so you get the feeling they care about your business.

For a great selection, and a purely funky experience, go to Bud's Jazz Records in Pioneer Square. You'll hear the music from the sidewalk. Just walk down the stairs off of S Jackson and enter the groove of Bud's. This store carries only the real thing - bebop, swing, etc. If you're looking for what they play on that smooth jazz station, forget it!

This restaurant has changed over the years, but the food is still good. It used to be a cafeteria line with chatty staff, and the best mac and cheese on Wednesdays! They also used to have a really nice, sweet couscous. But, I digress - it has gotten too corporate for my taste, but I do still purchase the bread. I think their sourdough can't be beat!

This bookstore has all the nooks and crannies to feel you are alone with the books! It's Elliot Bay Bookstore in Pioneer Square. Unfortunately, it is no longer independent, but it still maintains the same feel. The staff are everywhere, and very helpful. I've spent many a lunchtime ibrowsing n there, losing track of time. It has a good kids section, too.

It's Harold's in Wallingford. They have a great selection and all the books that you could look through. There are many lampshades to choose from as well. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. I purchased a pendant lamp at their annual Tiffany sale. It was quite a sale, with many lamps at 40% off retail. They even had an original Tiffany in the store to drool over, at a mere $100K!

Yes, it's Tweedy and Popp's Ace Hardware on 45th in Wallingford. This place is great - there is a large assortment of items you'd not expect to find in a hardware store, such as red-flyer wagons and watering cans. The guys are very helpful, and are full of advice! Its a convenient, friendly, neighborhood hardware store. They make keys, too!

Stone Way Hardware is a convenient store that my husband mostly frequents. I didn't find it very helpful when I've been in by myself. They are not extremely woman friendly...especially if you look like you don't have a clue about what you need...I didn't when I was sent to buy a stud finder. I came home with something that would not really work well on lathe and plaster. My husband likes the store.
