The benefit of Bloomie's compared to the other nail places in the city is that appears to be a little cleaner and efficient. However, my experience is that they just don't take as much care as some of the smaller places. The decor is loads better than some of the holes in the wall that do nails but for the price I'd rather have someone take the time to do my nails right.

I found this place on a whim one night wondering around the village and now I'm hooked. The all Japanese staff does an amazing job of adding volume and movement to my generally flat hair. The space is very retro in the basement of a walk-up with exposed heating pipes all around. They use Keihl styling products and a great smelling shampoo...I think Redken. The best part is the cost..only $50.

The selection at Sam's is pretty decent, but I think the staff are more helpful here than the other area hardware stores. Plus on Sunday everything in the store is 10% off. Not all the employees...
The selection at Sam's is pretty decent, but I think the staff are more helpful here than the other area hardware stores. Plus on Sunday everything in the store is 10% off. Not all the employees speak English however, which can be frustrating if you have a technical questions. However, usually a knowledge staff is present in the store. You just may need to wait a little longer.

This hardware store has a great selection of the staples but also some unusual but useful items, like cut to size mats with Indian rug designs and a wide selection of water filters. The staff was not very helpful however when I needed to have keys made. I tried to make replicas of Medeco keys, which I understand can be hard to duplicate. Only one of the six keys that I made worked and they were all made in the same color. The staff did refund my money but had no suggestions on why their machine didn't work.

There are very few gift stores in this area (excluding Columbus circle and the tourist haunts near Broadway), so I greatly appreciate Delphinium's classy, affordable and wide selection. I can always find a cute candle and candle holder or recipe book as a last minute gift. Also don't miss the frequent coupons they mail out to area residents.

The robes and dishes make great gifts and come in a variety of colors and styles. I also actually found a great deal on bamboo shades here. Plus they have a little tea/snack bar where you can rest and refresh.

The collection is really expansive and you can always count on a few good finds in the dollar bargain bins outside. Beware to take your Claritin before you enter if you're allergy to dust. You don't want to have to cut your visit short!

Westerly has a large and affordable selection of organic and health foods. The shopping experience requires patience because the aisles are narrow and often cramped. But somehow if you take it slow it works out. They stock all the essential organic products that I like to buy like cereal bars without corn syrup and organic frozen veggies. They also have a wide selection of teas and yogurts. Also they caring a large variety of vitamins. With over a half a dozen registers open during peak check out times, the wait is never more than a few minutes.

Kalustyan's has one of the largest collection of unusual spices, legumes, exotic vegetables and other ingredients that I've ever seen in one store. I love to go in just to browse because I know I'll find something I've never tried. Although it's mainly focuses on Indian cuisine the store stocks a variety of ethnic ingredients.
