This is a great place to find high-quality imported cheeses, coffees, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, etc, etc. They also sometimes have a rack of discontinued items where you can find high-quality things at a cheap price. If you're looking for European food items that you're having a hard time finding elsewhere, this is a good place to look.

Uwajimaya is the main place to go if you're looking for groceries to use in Japanese cooking. They have a good assortment of fresh produce, miso, nattou, and about everything else.
They also carry other Asian food items, like Chinese, Korean and Indonesian groceries, and while these are good too, some of these items seem to be available cheaper at other Asian groceries in the area.
For Japanese food, though, it's hard to think of anywhere that compares.

This is actually what I would consider the best bet for Japanese food of the several I've been to in Wallingford. The sushi has been pretty consistently good, the portions are big (especially considering the price), and there's complimentary houji-cha tea for you to drink with your meal. There's often a line with the popularity of the place and it's very limited seating, but for me it has somehow been a relaxing place to eat despite the small space and busy service.

Jewel of India, located in the same bldg where Neelam's used to be, is a good restaurant, but it's the lunch buffet that I feel is really outstanding, particularly for the Sunday brunch where there's even more variety.
There's always a great assortment of naan, raita, mint & tamarind chutney, curries, etc. My only regret is that although there's plenty to eat as a vegetarian they don't seem to give a discount for the vegetarian buffet anymore.
At dinner, the food is still good of course, but without ordering a whole range of items off the menu it's hard to get the same varied experience you get for the lunch buffet (and certainly not at the same price), so I've decided to eat here only at lunch.

Kabul is one of my favorite places to eat in Seattle - the food is great, the restaurant has a nice atmosphere inside, and they even have live sitar playing some evenings. I like the "dogh" salty mint-flavored yogurt drinks, but they're not for everyone. The eggplant is wonderful as is the rice cooked with spices, and everything else i've tried here!

There are two Cedars locations, both in the Univ District - this post is about the bigger one. see my post on the small original Cedars location also located in the U District and you'll see what the source of my confusion is.
now, I've heard that this big Cedars also serves Indian food and I've heard that it's great - that might very well be the case (although I haven't tried it yet).
I'm basically just judging the falafel which seemed to me to be absolutely inferior here, whereas it's always great at the smaller location. not to mention that the service is strangely overdone here whereas they seem friendly and down-to-earth at the smaller one.
does anyone have an explanation for that?

This is just what I'm looking for in a place to pick up a falafel sandwich to go - you can walk right up to the window that opens onto the sidewalk, get friendly service and great-tasting falafel at a very reasonable price. Now the OTHER Cedars located a few blocks north of here is another story, and that's always been confusing to me...

I was more disappointed with this place than I can remember being of any restaurant in recent memory... It's a conveyor-belt-style sushi place so you can pick your sushi off the belt as it comes by your table which is a novelty if you've never done it before - but there's so little to choose from, it's so ridiculously unauthentic, the portions of fish are neither generous nor remarkably tasty, and considering all this the prices are much too high.

Cafe Selam seems to be less well-known than it's neighboring Ethiopian restaurants, but it's not because of the taste/quality of the food! This is my favorite, a great place to get foul/ful - especially since the Harambee Cafe downtown doesn't seem to be around anymore. The service is laid-back, friendly and helpful; the food is great; there's outside seating if you want; and the Ethiopian beer and honey wine is a great accompaniment to the meal, of course. You might want to ask ahead if you like ordering 'foul' at a time other than breakfast like me - they're happy to make it at other times, but only if they have the ingredients on hand.

I should begin by saying that the reason for my low rating has a lot to do with my experience here relative to other Ethiopian restaurants that are within close walking distance of Assimba. The food isn't terrible, but I really wasn't impressed - Cafe Selam which is right across the street is my favorite. The Ethiopian drinks, as another post mentioned, are great, though! Ethiopian beer as well as honey wine are both highly recommended.
